A 12-year-old girl suffered injuries and smoke inhalation when she jumped from a window to escape the blaze that consumed her home.
The house fire occurred Wednesday at 489 Third Avenue in West Madison.
Madison and Danville Fire Units responded to a 911-call received at 12:35 a.m. of a house fire and arrived on the scene within minutes, according to a report issued by the Madison Fire Department.
Emergency responders observed heavy smoke coming from the first story windows of Third Avenue home and were able to quickly contain the fire to a bedroom and hallway area of the house, according to Madison Fire Chief James Lambert.
The four other occupants of the home were asleep at the time of the fire and managed to get out of the house.
Firefighters credit the 12-year-old girl’s brother for saving her life. When he was unable to get to her, he told her to jump out of a window.
The girl was transported to Boone Memorial Hospital.
Three fire engines and 16 firefighters remained on the scene until approximately 5:00 a.m. checking for
Hot spots.
Water supply was also a concern for firefighters, as the closest hydrant was 1,800 to 2,000 from the home, according to Chief Lambert.
The fire department laid over 2,500 of five-inch supply line and used the homeowner’s swimming pool to sustain a water supply.
Damage to the home was extensive and the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental by the fire department.
