Treadway completed 94-of-247 passes for 1,408 yards and carried 131 times for 695 yards. Deceptively fast with a 6-foot, 200-pound frame, he combined those quick feet with an accurate arm and sound football instincts to attack opposing defenses as both a passing and a running threat.
“Colby Treadway is a quality athlete who would excel in any style of offense," Sherman head coach Shann Elkins said. "Early in the season, he scrambled out of the pocket for most of his rushing yardage. Later on, our offense matured as a unit and he was able to pick up rushing yardage on our inside zone option. Along with just over 1,400 yards passing, Colby averaged 5.3 yards per rush for the entire season.”
Added Scott head coach Shane Griffith: “Colby Treadway has the ability to put a great deal of pressure on opposing defenses because he can make big plays with his feet as well as with his arm.”
On the other end of more than half of Treadway’s completions was Sherman junior receiver Jacob Rollo, who caught 48 passes for 812 yards (16.9 yards per catch) and nine touchdowns. Rollo also returned 25 kickoffs or punts for 680 yards and two touchdowns. Rollo, who finished fourth in the state track meet in the 400-meter run last year, caught 12 passes for 204 yards and four touchdowns against Liberty-Raleigh.
Two Skyhawks, each of whom made big plays for Scott on both sides of the ball, complete the All-County receiving corps.
Scott senior wideout Shayne Butcher, a team leader, had 26 catches for 331 yards and five scores along with 24 carries for 142 yards and one touchdown. Scott junior tight end Tyler Thompson contributed 11 catches for 175 yards and two touchdowns in addition to serving as a key blocker for the Skyhawks' ground game.
A pair of four-year contributors for Van also earned spots on the All-County offensive unit. Senior quarterback Jarrod Thomas gets the nod as a kicker-utility player, while senior offensive lineman Victor Niemec lands a spot up front.
“Victor Niemec battled back from a serious leg injury last season to be a senior leader in the trenches for us," Van head coach Bob Mullett said. "As a kicker, Jarrod Thomas converted about 75 percent of our PAT kicks, and he was a field-position weapon by regularly placing kickoffs on or near the goal line.”
Two Scott veterans join Niemec on the All-County offensive line after opening holes for the Skyhawks' ground game for three seasons. Scott senior Aaron Thompson was a team leader in the trenches, creating opportunities for the power ground game from his tackle spot. Senior Eric Price anchored Scott's offensive line from his center spot, handling the thankless but crucial task of making accurate snaps in the shotgun formation.
A pair of Tide trench standouts complete the All-County offensive line. Sherman senior Josh Callahan emerged as a pleasant surprise and consistent performer up front for the Tide. Sherman sophomore Zach Howerton, a 260-pound guard and a weight room warrior, overcame an early-season injury to contribute solid play in the trenches.
Joining Treadway in the All-County backfield are a pair of Skyhawks. Scott junior fullback Travis Bender and junior running back Cameron “Ronnie” Reeves powered the Skyhawks' ground game, which keyed their 7-4 season.
Bender, a hard-working lead blocker who also had a solid season at linebacker, pounded defenses for 335 tough yards and nine touchdowns on 73 carries. Despite missing time with an injury, Reeves finished the season with 750 yards and four touchdowns on 99 carries. He also caught six passes for 89 yards. He also turned in big plays as a defensive back and punt returner, posting a pair of punt return touchdowns.
Guiding the 2008 All-County squad is Scott's coaching staff. Griffith and assistants Jason Kingery, Mike Epling, Mickey Brown, Nick Shreve, Josh Craddock, Bob Connolly, Chris Connolly, Mickey Thompson, Todd Griffith and Jerry Workman garnered All-County honors after leading the Skyhawks to their sixth consecutive Class AA state playoff berth.
