Patriot Coal Corp. announced plans last week to shut down the Jupiter mine in Boone County.

Representatives with the company claim this leaves fewer than 100 workers without jobs.

The Associated Press is reporting that Patriot Coal Corp. will move the miners from the Jupiter mine to other mines in the area to work.

The closure is due to Jupiter’s “unacceptably high cost structure, coupled with softer market conditions,” the coal producer said in a press release.

In compliance with the Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act WARN), the company gave notice that the workers will lose their jobs between March 12 and March 25.

Patriot had announced plans on September 29 to idle the mining complex.

Patriot Coal Corp. is the third-largest producer and marketer of coal in the eastern United States, with 16 mining complexes in the Appalachian and Illinois Basin.
