Larry Cooper Harper, 62, of Madison, passed away at Boone Memorial Hospital on Saturday, March 31, 2012 after a long battle with glioblastoma.


Larry was born in Bandytown on June 7, 1949.


He was preceded in death by his father, Cooper Harper. He is survived by his mother, Lorraine Harper and his brother, Lee Harper both of Madison.


He also is survived by his wife, Pamela Thompson Harper, and their children and grandchildren, daughter Melissa Knight and her husband Richard and their children, John Paul and Sarah Abbott, daughter Holly Miller and her husband Shawn, and their children, Alex, Hayden and Griffin, son Eric Harper and his wife Heather and their children Ivory and Lucy.


Larry graduated from Van High School in the Class of 1967. He worked in the coal industry for 18 years, including stints at Landmark Coal and Appalachian Coal, where he was president of UMWA Local 1914.


He spent the last 10 years with the Department of Highways as the highway administrator in Boone County.


Larry attended Madison Baptist Church. He loved the game of baseball and spent most of his free time coaching his son, his son’s friends, and his grandsons.


Funeral service was on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, Handley Funeral Home, Danville, WV with Tom Bias and Bill Cook officiating. Burial followed in Boone Memorial Park, Madison.
