WHITESVILLE — A memorial to the men and women of the Big Coal River area who served in the armed forces of the United States is being planned and funds are being raised for the project.

Organizers told the Coal Valley News that the memorial will be built on property donated by the Town of Whitesville adjacent to the Branch Library.

Currently, they say, the group has raised close to $6,000 for the project.

William “Ted” Anderson, chairman, Gail Daniels, secretary, Deborah Anderson, treasurer, Georgia Price and Randall Kirk have been donating their time to meet and plan fundraising events that would boost the project along.

“We are accepting donations and plan on publishing a book with the names of Big Coal River area veterans.

“If you are a military veteran or a family member of a disabled or deceased military veteran, you may have your name or the named of your loved one listed in the book by filling out our form and enclosing $15,” organizers stated.

Organizers say they have received a large outpouring of support from the community for the project and welcome any input and assistance from community members interested in helping them see the project to completion.

Contact one of the committee members or call Ted Anderson at 854-2419. Donations can be sent to: P.O. Box 475, Whitesville, W.Va. 25209.
