SETH -- Despite another week of bad weather, the Sherman Lady Tide managed to play two of its three scheduled games last week.
Sherman's road game against Boone County rival Van was moved from Jan. 27 to Feb. 18 because of the winter weather and ensuing school closing. That game already had been rescheduled once for the same reason.
Sherman dropped to 5-7 on the season with losses to Liberty Raleigh on Thursday and Westside on Friday.
Westside 65, Sherman 38
The Lady Tide trailed 15-8 after the first quarter, 32-13 at halftime and 52-26 after the third quarter.
“We played pretty good at times,” Sherman coach Terri Dawn Williams said. “We had a stretch from the end of the first quarter to the beginning of the second where we couldn’t make a shot.”
Junior forward Madison Bowman led the Lady Tide with 11 points. She also had nine boards.
Senior guard Brittany Merritt provided eight points. Junior guard Crystal Halstead added seven points and seven boards.
Junior forward Megan Williams scored five points. Junior forward Amanda Browning contributed three points and eight boards. Senior guard Lindsey Perry added three points.
Ashley Step, Hannah Brown and Cheyenna Lusk each had 10 points for the visiting Lady Renegades.
“If we didn’t get into these dry spells where we didn’t make any baskets we could have won,” Williams said. “We hustled and rebounded well, but missed shots and a few turnovers did us in.”
Liberty Raleigh 56, Sherman 50
The Lady Tide took a 15-14 lead after the first quarter, but the visiting Lady Raiders used a 14-9 advantage in the second quarter to grab a 28-24 lead at halftime.
The Raleigh County squad extended its lead to 42-35 after the third quarter. Despite winning the fourth quarter, the Boone County team was unable to muster enough momentum to pull out a come-from-behind victory at home.
“We had all kinds of opportunities,” Williams said. “We just couldn’t make the shots when we needed to.”
The Lady Tide sent the Lady Raiders to the foul line for 40 free throws, putting itself in foul trouble throughout the game. Liberty Raleigh made 24 of those charity-stripe opportunities.
Bowman recorded a double-double for the maroon-and-gold squad, scoring 11 points, grabbing 13 boards and collecting five steals.
Browning also earned a double-double, finishing with 11 points, 12 boards and three steals.
Junior guard Jessica Hudson contributed 10 points and four steals. Merritt added eight points.
Halstead provided five points, 10 boards and four steals. Williams scored four points. Perry added a foul shot.
Liberty Raleigh’s Kara Daniels netted 12 points.
“The girls played hard," Williams said. "I can never fault them for not giving it their all. We have great stats. We just aren’t able to finish.”
Sherman was scheduled to visit Liberty Raleigh on Monday for a rematch. Results for that game were unavailable for this week's edition but will be published in next week’s issue.
Sherman is scheduled to visit Westside on Thursday, host Poca on Monday and host Van next Wednesday.
