Greg Dillon’s U-11 soccer team finished the season undefeated in the Boone County Youth Soccer League with an inner league record of 6-0-2, and over all scrimmage record of 15-0-2.
On a blistering hot 100 degree day Dillon’s U-11 Green Goblins finished their season on a pretty high note.
The teams battled back and forth but Grant Older’s penalty shot to take the lead and the win 1-0.
Coach Jared’s team had a few opportunities from outstanding slippery midfielder Dylan M. to take a few shots, but wiry goalie Dawson Kinser made a spectacular save to shut down the threat.
“Most of the game was pretty boring for me because our offense of Ian Gillispie, grant and Luke Older and Roberto Lopez was on the attack all day. But when they pressed real hard, I made a save that was needed at the time,” said Dawson.
Grant Older, who made the winning goal comments, “I was throwing up and very sick with flue the night before but I told mom I couldn’t miss this game. I hit the goal post on two shots and I and Roberto Lopez kept shooting near misses all day. So the 1-0 game wasn’t as close as the score says. It could have been even better if we had had Ashley Day. Yet, we dominated the game from start to finish.”
Coach Dillon was worried we wouldn’t be competitive because of vacation time and he had 6 of his key players out.
Dillon praised the outstanding defensive efforts of Adrianna Ballard, Lilly Bias, chase brown, Laura Ballard and Elijah Toler.
Dillon said some of the most exciting moments for me as a coach are watching the kids see the field the way we practice. The passing of the older brothers, Roberto Lopez, Ian Gillispie and Quentin Toler amazed me. They kept it away from the defenders and unselfishly passed for shots at a goal.
Both teams played a good game yet the dominant defensive pressure by Amelia Setser and the midfield heroics by older, A. Ballard, L. Bias and C. Brown was the deciding factor.
It was a physical game said Adrianna Ballard. You get shoved, elbowed, kicked and knocked down. I have had the breath knocked out of me before and been stomped on in a group but coach encourages us to battle back .We don’t push in the back or hit people but “bumping with your hips for position and using your shoulders to the ball has made me better and confident.”
After the game, Grant Older was reflecting on the season. We thought that Chris and Robin’s team were loaded and everyone would be battling for second place. Daniels team came on better at the end of the season and Jason’s team could have beaten anyone any day. Yet the winless team of Coach Carl gave everyone the most problems. They never quit and our coach told us they were a model to shoot after, and of course Jared’s team had the closest record to ours and it was fitting to play him at the end. It was not as hard as I thought. I am glad we didn’t play Daniel’s team. They were coming on strong toward the end of the season. I’m glad I stayed with Coach Dillon. I learned a lot from him. All of us did. He loves us, respects us, expects more from us and doesn’t start drama.
When asked about the undefeated season Dillon replied, “All the kids are winners whether they won or lost. Just getting on the field was proof. It takes guts to run, get pushed/shoved around, tripped and kicked while trying to kick a ball against people who want the same thing, and about the winning record. I think it’s great for the kids to go home and have the feeling of being the best on that given day and being undefeated is tough at any level. To deal with that pressure and succeed is a true testament of character. I have a lot of respect for those kids. Hopefully one day when they have the rent due and kids to feed they can call up this memory and say I can get out of bed and make something that is difficult possible.”
My only regret is Brannon Akers, Tyler Likens and Carissa Gibson could not be a part of this season.
