The Scott Skyhawks' boys basketball team posted a road win over longtime rival Chapmanville last week, sandwiching that victory with tough but very competitive losses to Nicholas County and Chesapeake, Ohio.

Scott 72, Chapmanville 46

The Skyhawks led by 20 (41-21) at halftime and went to post the 72-46 win at Chapmanville last Friday evening.

Capitalizing on a 19-9 turnover advantage, the Skyhawks clicked for a team total of 10 three-point shots.

The win gave the Skyhawks a regular-season sweep over the rival Tigers this season.

Steven McComas (29 points and nine assists) and Carl Shaffer (19 points and eight rebounds) paced the Skyhawks' win. McComas assaulted the nets with seven three-point goals, including five during the first half. Shaffer fired in a trio of three-pointers, all in the second quarter.

Tyler Ramsey added six Scott points. Shayne Butcher contributed five points and three rebounds. Shawn Ballard had four points and four rebounds. Billy Queen (three points) and Tyler Thompson (two points) each grabbed four rebounds.

Jesse Belcher had two points. Marshall Tully and Chase Woodruff each netted one point.

Scott tallied 14 two-point goals, 10 three-pointers and 14-of-18 charity shots. Chapmanville managed 14 two-pointers, a trio of three-pointers and 9-of-13 foul shots.

Ethan Brumfield (13) and Brooks Cooper (12) combined for 25 points to pace the Tigers' offense.

Chesapeake 65, Scott 57

The Skyhawks led 27-26 at halftime and 44-40 after three periods, but the visiting Panthers used a 10-0 run midway through the fourth stanza to hand Scott a rare home loss.

Chesapeake improved to 12-3. Scott slipped to 7-10.

The Skyhawks flew out to an early seven-point lead (10-3) as Shaffer netted a pair of jump shots and a hoop on a baseline drive. Woodruff and McComas each added a first quarter three-pointer as Scott took a 16-12 edge into the second frame.

Three Panthers netted four points each during the second quarter as Chesapeake knifed into the Scott lead and claimed several one-point advantages. A long two-pointer by Ballard just before the halftime buzzer sent Scott into intermission with a 27-26 lead.

The Skyhawks bumped their lead to 44-40 by the end of the third stanza as Thompson tossed in six third-period points, including a pair of offensive rebound baskets. McComas added a short jumper and a three-point hoop, Ramsey netted two short jumpers, and Shaffer scored on a tip-in.

Leading 47-46 after a Shaffer drive with about six minutes left to play, Scott saw Chesapeake post a 10-0 run during the next three minute of play. Peter Hintz had a hoop and two free throws, while teammates Nathan Copley and Kyle Webb each netted a three-pointer as the Panthers gained control of the contest.

Shaffer snapped the Skyhawks' drought when he banked home a short jumper to cut the Panther lead to 56-49 with 2:25 remaining. Woodruff sliced the margin to five with an inside hoop, but Chesapeake secured the win by netting 7-of-8 free throws during the final two minutes of play.

“We had this game in hand for just over three quarters, but during that 10-0 run in the fourth quarter we lost defensive contact with their shooters and they made us pay for that," Scott coach Jason Kingery said.

"Chesapeake has a really good team and games like this will make our team better come tourney time. I believe this is our first home loss in about 15 games, dating back all the way through last season. This was a very entertaining game for fans to watch, and it is the type of game that we want to play.”

Webb paced the Panthers with 24 points, including four three-pointers, while Hintz added 15 and Copley tossed in 12.

Chesapeake connected on 16 two-point goals, six three-pointers and 15-of-20 free throws. Scott netted 20 two-pointers, five three-pointers and 2-of-8 free throws.

McComas (18 points and seven assists) and Shaffer (14 points and six rebounds) powered the Skyhawks' effort. Thompson provided a presence in the paint, scoring eight points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Woodruff tallied five points. Ballard, Butcher and Ramsey all netted four points each.

Nicholas County 69, Scott 68

Scott led 26-13 after one period and 37-35 at halftime, but trailed 55-51 after three quarters and eventually dropped a one-point heartbreaker at Nicholas County last Monday.
