SETH -- The Sherman Lady Tide improved its record to 8-9 with a pair of wins over Boone County rival Van and Teays Valley Christian.

The Lady Tide is 2-0 against the Lady Bulldogs this season with one more meeting before postseason play begins.

The squad has two games remaining before that. According to Sherman coach Terri Dawn Williams, the team hopes to end the season with a winning record and carry some much-needed momentum into postseason play.

Sherman 48, Van 32

The host Lady Tide found itself down at the beginning of the game, letting the Lady Bulldogs pull away with an 8-2 lead during the first quarter.

Because of some unusual circumstances, the Lady Tide regained the lead before the buzzer at 11-8.

During the first four minutes of the first quarter, senior guard Kristen Jarrell picked up four fouls. Yes, four fouls in four minutes.

According to Van coach Jason Conrad, Jarrell actually was whistled for her third and fourth fouls in a matter of 13 seconds.

While Jarrell sat the bench for most of the first half, the Lady Bulldogs' second-leading scorer also was absent. Senior guard Meghan Pauley did not make the trip to Seth because of a car accident. She was OK and played in the Lady Bulldogs’ next game, however.

Sherman extended its lead to 25-12 at halftime.

“We started out slow,” Williams said. “They got out to an early lead on us, but we settled down and battled back.”

The Lady Tide increased its lead to 38-22 after the third quarter.

Jarrell re-entered for Van in the second half and played all 16 minutes without picking up a foul. Her defensive play became much less aggressive, but it was a positive for the Lady Bulldogs' morale.

“We really slowed it down in the fourth quarter,” Williams said. “At one point we ran over two minutes off the clock.”

“Even though it hurt not having Kristen in the game much, it really helped us unify as a team,” Conrad said. “With Kristen and Meghan gone, other players had to step up and I think it really molded us together as a unit.”

Junior guard Megan Williams led all players with 13 points. She also added 12 boards and four steals to pick up a double-double.

Junior forward Madison Bowman scored 11 points. She also added 12 boards and two steals to pick up her third consecutive double-double.

Junior guard Jessica Hudson added six points and five boards. Senior guard Lyndsey Perry added six points. Senior guard Brittany Merritt added four points and four boards. Sophomore forward Randi Dillon added four points.

“Our scoring was very well-balanced,” Williams said. “We hit key shots when we needed to so that we could keep our lead.”

Junior forward Hannah Brown scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds for Van. Jarrell added nine points and 5 boards, matching her season low in points.

Sophomore guard Toni Gogas added five points, three boards and one steal. Senior forward Erin Beth Cook added four points and four boards. Senior center Savannah Holland added four points and two boards.

“The girls played really hard and I was proud of their effort,” Conrad said. “We play them one more time at home, and hopefully this time we can have a full roster.”

Sherman 54, Teays Valley Christian 45

Sherman jumped out to an early 22-10 lead as it played host to Teays Valley Christian on Monday night.

The Lady Tide extended its lead to 31-17 by halftime.

The teams tied in the third quarter at 14-14, leaving Sherman with a 14-point lead on the visiting team at 45-31.

The Lady Lions decreased the Lady Tide lead by five in the fourth quarter but could not get any closer.

“It was good to get a win,” Williams said. “We played a good game. It was the first time we ran a man-to-man defense the whole game, and it turned out really nice. We played good team defense.”

Bowman led the Tide with 18 points. She also added 12 boards and two steals.

Junior guard Crystal Halstead added nine points, five boards and three steals. Merritt added eight points, five boards and three steals. Hudson added eight points, three boards and two steals.

Williams added seven points, eight boards and one steal. Freshman guard Hallie Jarrell added four points and one board.

Elizabeth Yoder scored 25 points for the Lady Lions.

“We knew that Yoder was good,” Williams said. “We did a good job on defense containing her. Crystal played man to man on her and held her to 12 points in the first three and a half quarters.”

Yoder scored 13 of her 25 points with less than three minutes to play in the game.

“We played good, smart, basketball,” Williams said. “This was one of the better games we played all year.”

Herbert Hoover 43, Sherman 37

The Lady Huskies jumped out on the Lady Tide early, posting a 15-7 lead after the first quarter.

Herbert Hoover extended its lead to 27-13 by halftime.

“We had some issues within the team that had to be sorted out at halftime,” Williams said. "That was the worst first half we had played in two years.”

The Lady Tide mounted a small comeback, shaving the Lady Huskies' lead by nine to make the third quarter score 33-28.

The Kanawha County squad held off its Boone County opponent in the fourth quarter.

“This was a game that we should have won,” Williams said. “We played a good game in the second half, but we just couldn’t pull ahead. We came close, but a couple girls fouled out and that was it. I was proud of their performance in the second half.”

Bowman added 10 points and 11 boards. Williams added 10 points, five boards and three steals. Hudson added 10 points. Halstead added seven points, 11 boards, and three steals.

Kayla Spencer scored 16 points for Herbert Hoover.

Poca 61, Sherman 48

The Lady Tide jumped out to a 15-9 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Dots then outscored the Lady Tide 16-6 in the second quarter to take a 25-21 lead at halftime.

The Lady Dots increased their lead by three in the third quarter, giving them a 39-32 lead.

Despite a 16-point quarter by the Lady Tide, the Lady Tide walked away with a road win.

“It was a four-point game with 1:30 left in the game,” Williams said. “We had to start fouling and that sent them to the line to get easy points.”

Merritt scored 17 points. Bowman added 11 points, 11 boards and two steals. Williams added nine points, eight boards and five steals. Halstead added eight points. Hudson scored three points.

Adrian Cunningham added 25 points for Poca.

“We played a really good game,” Williams said. “The first time we played at their place they beat us by 28. We had a shot to win it, but it doesn’t didn’t fall for us. I was very proud of how the girls played.”

Sherman will visit Boone County rival Van today and host Chapmanville on Thursday in its regular-season finale.

The sectional tournament will begin Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Sissonville High School. Sherman will take on Herbert Hoover in its opening game.
