“Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-20).
The words of our text contains one of the greatest promises we can find in the Bible. Men and women were struggling und the burden of sin, insecurity and an empty religion.
To the people of that day and to the people of this day Jesus still gives the same invitation. “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Here Jesus is referring to being burdened with sin. But, I will give you rest; that is like a good nights sleep. When you get up you feel a whole lot better. Here Jesus promises this rest. Jesus goes on and tells us that our sin is to heavy to carry. We could get a hernia from our burdens. There is only one way to be relieved from our burdens, and that is at the foot of the cross; This is were Jesus bore our sin. He is there inviting us to come and He will give us rest from our sins.
We also see in John 6:37 another promise. “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will no wise cast out.”
During this time the rich was for the rich, they had no care for the poor. But, one day the Prince of Peace came and called all of the out cast to come to Him. These were the ones people that the world had no association with. Jesus came to help the poor, the middle, and upper class. The Word of God tells us that, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23); It does not matter if one is rich, or poor, because all have sinned and we all need to be forgiven of sins, that have burdened all of us. Christ will give you all the help you need. I don’t care what your sin is, bring it to Him. There are many who would like to come to Christ, but they want to get ready first. They first want to stop this sin and that sin, swearing, and drinking, and then they will be ready. Getting ready like this would a sick person waiting until he gets well, and then sending for a doctor. Or, it would be like a blind man waiting until he recovers his sight, and then sending for a doctor. If you will bring your sickness and your blindness to Christ, he will help you. It is the sick that need a physician and not those who are well. Is there a person here who is troubled with any besetting sin, I don’t care what it is, let that person come to Christ. He will help him; for he has promised, “Him that cometh unto me, I will in no wise cast out. I like these “I will.” No man living can say that. There is only One who can say that, and that is Jesus Christ.
Christ will receive you and He will help you also. He is the only one that can give this promise of rest. That is security! He takes care of the past, present, and the future. He will take you as you are. If you are committed to Christ, you don’t have to worry about it. The Lord will take you to His loving bosom, and will hold you, and keep you until that day.
Why don’t you take God’s invitation, what can you lose? You will fee l a lot better and the Lord will hold your hand all the way to the end of the earth! “…and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
