Truth and freedom standing together
by BILL ELLIS
Freedom is strong beyond all imagination, but once it is lost, the generation that lost it will never enjoy it again. It may not return to the children or the grandchildren of those who lost it.
All across America, we see the undeniable evidence that truth is sleeping away and slipping away. Truth and freedom survive and thrive together or perish together.
Religious freedom is crowded out and limited daily in some manner throughout the nation and often in the name of tolerance.
General Douglas MacArthur, the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in the Pacific during World War II, received the surrender of the Japanese forces in Tokyo Bay on the U.S.S. Missouri, September 3, 1945. The famous five-star General said, “History fails to record a single precedent in which nations subject to moral decay have not passed into political and economic decline. There has been either a spiritual awakening to overcome the moral lapse, or a progressive deterioration leading to ultimate national disaster.”
How much longer will we sit idly by while our nation and its leaders turn their back on truth, freedom and morality? Nobody seems to be exempt from lying, stealing, cheating and immorality.
In such a day, the pulpits of America must awaken from sleep and preach the message once delivered across this land that produced freedom and a revival of righteousness. Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, sometimes controversial in his preaching, did say, “Humans are of infinite worth intrinsically because they are created in God’s image. Apartheid, injustice, oppression, exploitation are not only wrong; they are positively blasphemous because they treat the children of God as if they are less than His.”
It is almost impossible to believe any political ad in any form from any politician. Daily, I hear and read such political talk and I am convinced it is nothing more than a lie, “The refuse of fools and cowards” as Lord Chesterfield defined it. Frankly, we have political leaders turned loose on an ignorant and gullible society, who seek help in manufacturing the most untruthful statements that exceed all expectations. You know they are lying every time they speak.
The late Charles Colson, in one of his finest books, The Faith, published by Zondervan, 2008, wrote, “When truth is abandoned, therapy takes its place. We learn how to cope with our problems instead of curing them.” My friend continued, “Abandonment of the truth shows up in widespread biblical illiteracy.”
Colson wrote that pollster George Barna “… has discovered that most churchgoing adults reject the accuracy of the Bible, the existence of Satan, and the sinlessness of Jesus.” He continues, “It would be humorous if it were not so tragic that the most widely known Bible verse among adult and teen believers is ‘God helps those who help themselves,’ which is not in the Bible – it’s actually a quote from Ben Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac (1757).”
When truth and faith wane and lose their power and veracity, we are eroding the very foundation on which our nation rests.
It was Jesus, the living bedrock of our nation, who declared eternal truth when He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). It was on absolute truth that Jesus built the church and stated, “… and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18).
To guarantee continuing freedom, we must demand truth and responsibility from our leaders and each other. Only on the foundation of truth, God’s eternal truth, will freedom endure. It is necessary that truth be spoken, believed and lived by it we are to continue to be a free nation.
