Dear Editor:

Another month has passed already and what a month it has been. We opened our Wharton Community Center as cooling station while the power was off. It was off many days and our station stayed open 24/7. I would like to give a great big thank you to all the women of the Wharton Community Center that have worked so diligently and tirelessly through the power outage to make a bad situation a lot more bearable. The ladies that I am going to name have given of their time, money, and culinary talent to prepare and serve many of the residents of the Wharton and Pond Fork Area. These women worked for hours in the kitchen without complaint. The food they made was exceptional and it was received with much gratitude.

I am going to attempt to name these ladies if I forget a name please forgive me as it was not intentional. These ladies are garnet Nichols, Jo Ann Lowery, Jackie Burgess, Karen Baker, Ann Saunders, Lana Jarvis, and Anna Mae Williams. Junior Williams and Frank Pru were the gofers that carried water and ice to everyone’s vehicles. Also, the employees of the Boone County Maintenance Department, Commissioner Ed Hendricks, Greg Lay, and Kerry Dickens helped out too. A special thank-you to my old pal Delbert Lowery who used his vehicle to deliver much needed relief to those that were unable to get out.

There were several days as many as 75 to 100 people were fed. They have supplied bottled water, ice (when available), and soft drinks. The center has served as a cooling center during the heat wave and so many people have come in and taken a break from the heat or if nothing else just came in to socialize and enjoy others company during this time.

I would like to take a moment to thank all the volunteers who helped at the Wharton Community Center during the power outage. I would like to thank all who helped cook, anyone who donated food, the people who stayed all night at the center to keep it opened, the County Commission, National Guard, Geed Bank of Huntington, Homeland Security, FEMA, and the Red Cross. If I left anyone out, I’m sorry. Again I appreciate your help and I’m sure the community did also. Also Thank you to Glen Jarvis for keeping the center open all night.

Thank you Glen!
