PADEN CITY – Van racked up 289 yards rushing and scored 7 touchdowns to defeat the Paden City Wildcats last Friday evening.
Paden City stayed even with visiting Van (1-1) for a quarter here Friday night, but a 20-point second quarter by the Bulldogs sent Van on its way to a 44-18 win over the Wildcats. Paden City tied the game at 6 on a 16-yard TD by Brandon Cross, who scored all three of the Wildcats touchdowns, rushing for 147 yards on 26 carries.
Van senior Tyler Workman led the Bulldogs with 106 yards rushing on 11 carries. Workman scored 3 rushing touchdowns on runs of 7, 27, and 58 yards.
Junior Quarterback Brandon Elswick scored twice for the Bulldogs. He scored on a 3 yard run and on a 54 yard fumble return. Elswick rushed for 83 yards on 8 carries.
Senior Fullback Brandon Perry carried the ball 6 times for 81 yards and 2 touchdowns. Junior Linebacker Corey Agosti led the Bulldog defense with 22 tackles. He had 19 solo tackles, 3 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Elswick added 10 tackles, one interception and the 54 yard fumble return for a score.
Junior Safety, Justin Lambert also contributed 10 tackles, 3 passes defended and had one interception. Junior Defensive End, Derrick Halley led the Van defensive line with 5 tackles, including 2 for a loss.
Van will welcome the Valley Fayette Greyhounds to Herschel Jarrell field Friday at 7:30pm.
Meanwhile, Hershel Jarrell Field hosted its first Middle School Football game in four years last Thursday evening.
The Van Middle School Football team won a hard fought contest against the visiting Duval Yellow Jackets 19-12.
Van’s offensive and defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage much of the night with Duval breaking free on two long plays making the game very close.
Van was led on offense by co-captains, Quarterback Taylor Jarrell and Tight End Cole Price. Jarrell completed 8 of 11 passes for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Price caught 4 passes for 44 yards and both touchdowns.
Drew Price led the Bulldog ground attack with 62 yards and 1 touchdown on 9 carries followed by Brady Grant with 8 rushes for 48 yards.
Daniel Gibson added 34 yards on 3 carries. Drew made 12 tackles and Grant made 7 tackles to led the Van defense.
Gibson added 4 tackles and an interception and Tyler Houser was in on 7 tackles and forced a key fumble late in the game.
D.J. Jarrell, Gage Shipman and Jarred Cook contributed 5 tackles each.
