Sylvester Police announce DUI/Sobriety checkpoint
The Sylvester Police Department, along with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, West Virginia State Police and Whitesville Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Sobriety checkpoint on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013. The checkpoint will begin at 6 p.m. and conclude at midnight. The checkpoint will be conducted in the 32000 Block of Coal River Road.
The Madison-Danville Jaycees will host a “Bingo Night” at the Lick Creek Nutritional Center on Friday, January 18. Games are $2 each or 10 games for $15. Doors will open at 7 p.m. with Bingo starting at 7:30 p.m. Stop by and enjoy some delicious food, fun, and your chance to win one of our great prizes including cash! All ages welcome.

Rental Assistance Program
The Boone County Housing Authority will be changing the application process for Section 8 Rental assistance program. We will begin on Feb. 1, 2013, of maintaining a preference waiting list and a non-preference waiting list. We will have a separate waiting list with date and time for local residents of our jurisdiction of Boone and Lincoln counties. We will be accepting any comments you may have in writing at Boone County Housing Authority, 824 Lick Creek Road, Danville, WV 25053, by Jan. 18, 2013.
LIEAP (LOW INCOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM)
The Metro Aging and Disability Resource Center will be assisting the seniors and the disabled to apply for help with their heating bills through the LIEAP (LOW INCOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM) public intake period, starting Jan. 22 through Feb. 1, 2013. LINK Child Care Resource and Referral is a program of River Valley Child Development Services and is grant funded through the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau of Children and Families, Early Care and Education. We serve Boone, Cabell, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, Mingo, Putnam, and Wayne Counties by assisting low income families with the cost of child care so they may improve their lives through employment, school and the WV Works program. We also provide consumer education so families can make informed decisions regarding the care and education of their children. Additionally, our agency recruits child care providers, conducts regular training workshops for child care professionals, and provides technical assistance such as behavior consultations and the Traveling Resource and Information Library System (TRAILS).
There will be an auction at the Orgas Community Center on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013. Bidding starts at 6 p.m., but come early to view all the items up for auction. There will be a concession stand serving hotdogs, BBQs, taco salad, nachos and cheese, homemade goodies, hot and cold drinks and much more. The Sylvester Assembly of God is sponsoring this event.

If you are a home owner and are either 65 years old, or younger with an established disability, and you have qualified for the WV Homestead Exemption Program, then you should have received information from the WV State Tax Department regarding your eligibility for a tax credit benefit. The WV Aging and Disability Resource Centers are helping individuals complete the West Virginia state personal income tax return required to claim the 2011 SENIOR CITIZENS TAX CREDIT. The food handlers classes will be held at the Public Health Building, located near Danville, just off the Lick Creek Road, on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, from 2 to 6 p.m. Please note that under state law any person(s) that is involved in the preparation or service of food for public consumption is required to attend a certified food service training course. There will be a $5 charge for the skin test (PPD). The course will be conducted by Sandra Giles, Boone County Sanitarians.
Grief Recovery Support Groups
Grief recovery groups are designed for people who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The group setting provides a “safe place”, a place you can really be yourself, no matter how you are feeling. You will be understood, listened to, and unconditionally supported by others who have also experienced the loss of a loved one. Sometimes it just helps to know you are not alone in your grief journey and there are others who can relate to your experience.
