Free screenings


Boone County Schools will offer free 3 to 5 year old screenings on Friday, March 8, 2013. The free screenings will be for developmental, vision, hearing, speech and language for Boone County children. Please call 304-369-8267 to schedule an appointment.


PTO Auction


The 2013 Annual PTO Auction is scheduled for Saturday, March 9, in the Nellis Gym. Viewing and concession open at 5 p.m. and bidding starts at 6 p.m.


St. Patrick’s Day Bingo Night


Madison-Danville Jaycees will host a St. Patrick’s Day Bingo Night on Friday, March 15, at the Lick Creek Nutrition Center in Danville. Doors open at 7 p.m.; Bingo begins at 7:30 p.m. Games cost $2 each or $15 for 10 games. There will also be a 50/50 raffle in addition to prizes awarded after each game. Madison Colts Midget League Football


The Madison Colts are now accepting resumes for Coaching positions for the upcoming season. BCARSE meeting


The Boone County Assn. of Retired School Employees (BCARSE) next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 17, and not on March 20 as originally planned. The meeting will be called to order at 10 a.m. at the Park Ave. Restaurant in Danville.


Trina Hager will present the program with information concerning the needs of home-bound patients. Recently, changes concerning these needs have been changed. She will bring us up to date on all of this available coverage.


Jenny Light, president, urges members to attend. Plan now to attend and enjoy the food, fun and fellowship. Door prizes will be awarded. 50/50 will be available. Judy Micheals will present the devotional.


Notice of meeting


The Boone County Public Service District (PSD) will hold its monthly Water and Wastewater meetings on Monday, March 11, 2013, at the Board office. If you wish to be on the agenda please call the Board office at 304-369-2622.


The Water Board meeting will open at 6 p.m., prevailing time, followed by the Wastewater meeting at its Board office in room 101 of the Danville Community Center, Hopkins Avenue, Danville, West Virginia, for the following purposes: 1) Water Agenda: Approval of Invoices and Line Extensions. 2) Wastewater Agenda: Approval of Invoices and District Operations.


Housing Authority to meet


The quarterly meeting of the Boone County Housing and Redevelopment Authority will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 6 p.m. at Black Diamond Arbors in Danville.


Public Service Announcement


The Food Handlers Classes will be held at the Public Health Building, located near Danville, just off the Lick Creek Road. Dates and times are as follows: Monday, March 11, 2013, 2 to 6 p.m.


Please note that under state law any person(s) that is involved in the preparation or service of food for public consumption is required to attend a certified food service training course. There will be a $5 charge for the skin test (PPD). The course will be conducted by Sandra Giles, Boone County Sanitarians. Should you need a skin test please come early.


Neighborhood Watch meeting


The “Neighborhood Watch” meeting for the Ashford-Nellis area will be March 26, at 6 p.m. at the Nellis Church/Archives.


West Virginia Mining Symposium


The 40th Annual West Virginia Mining Symposium, the region’s premier annual mining event drawing industry-wide participation, will take place this week – March 6-8 – at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, West Virginia. The event is conducted by the West Virginia Coal Association.


The West Virginia Mining Symposium provides an opportunity for the industry to discuss current domestic and international marketing and production trends and to showcase new mining and mine safety technologies. Attendees will participate in mine safety and environmental workshops and state mining companies will be honored for mine safety performance and environmental quality on March 7-8.


Industry leaders will be joined by a number of featured speakers, to include: Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, Congressman Nick Joe Rahall, Congressman David McKinley (invited) and Attorney General Patrick Morrissey.

Appalachian Council Head Start/Pre-K


Appalachian Council Head Start is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 school year. Children must be 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2013. Services are available for children with disabilities or special needs. There is no fee required for entrance into Head Start.


Information needed to apply includes verification of income for a 12 month period, birth certificate from vital statistics, immunization record and social security card (optional).


Head Start/Pre-K locations include Brookview Elementary, Danville Head Start, Prenter Head Start, Racine Head Start, Ramage Elementary, Wharton Elementary and Whitesville Elementary.

WV Woodland Owners Association 2013 Annual Meeting & Seminar


On Saturday, March 23, 2013, The Annual West Virginia Woodland Owners Association Meeting & Seminar will be held in Elkins. The meeting will be held at the Wood Technology Center from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m. and will include a luncheon speaker. A tour of the Wood Tech Center is scheduled from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Also, 5 (Category 1) CFE Credits are being offered.

Free admission to Coal Scrip Show


The National Scrip Collectors Association, a not for profit group, will be holding its semi-annual show and meeting in Beckley on April 19, 2013, starting at 8 a.m. and ending at noon on the 20th. The meeting will be at the Country Inn & Suites at 2120 Harper Road in Beckley. Admission is free to the public.


Coal Scrip was the private currency of coal companies in over 612 towns in just West Virginia alone. In the mid-1950s scrip had all but disappeared as a method of labor payment. Coal scrip, like other obsolete currency, has survived and today is thriving in the hands of collectors.


At this show, there will be vendors, dealers and collectors that would offer their opinions as to the value of any scrip and maybe where to sell it, if desired. Other mining memorabilia, artifacts, coal scrip books and catalogues usually have dealers too at the show. Part of the purpose of the NSCA is to encourage the study and research of the history of coal mining companies as it relates to the usage of scrip tokens and the families that used it.

The Madison Civic Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, for citizens to use to walk in this winter.
