It’s the morning of a national holiday and all schools are closed. Most kids are sleeping late, or lying around their homes, trying to take advantage of the day off, except for a few. About 40 high school students still get up, pack their gear and head off to board a bus and head to school, but it’s not exactly what you would normally think.

These students went off to ski school. Others will head directly to the slopes. These students make up the Ski Club at Scott High School and that’s where the Martin Luther King holiday marked the beginning of the Ski Club season, weather and recent snowfall in Southern West Virginia to make a Club outing, the first one of the 2013 season.

The Scott Ski Club is supervised this year by Sheila Paitsel and several adult volunteers. The kids pay their own way, the adults just make this opportunity available to them. For some it’s their first adventure to ski and headed to ski school from trained professionals. For others, they are regulars who return and enjoy the cold weather sport, who headed to the more challenging downhill runs. Either way, the students enjoy an opportunity to learn a new physical activity while enjoying some of the unique landscape of West Virginia. Normally, the skiers enjoyed clear skies with temperatures in the upper 30’s during the days, but as the sun set, temperatures typically dive into the 20’s with windchills into the teens.

From mid-January until this past weekend students took to the slopes on school holidays or after school, on Mondays at the Winterplace Ski Resort at Ghent. This past weekend finished the Ski Club season as the crew headed north and spent the weekend at the Timberline Resort, near Canaan Valley, WV. Adults and students alike call this ski season a successful one, where students have learned a new activity they can enjoy for years to come.
