Notification of Sobriety of Checkpoint


The West Virginia State Police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint on Friday, March 29, 2013, through Saturday, March 30, 2013, between the hours of 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. at U.S. 119, south of the Danville/Madison exit in Boone County.

Indoor Flea Market


The Boone County Fair is Sponsoring a Flea Market at the Madison Civic Center on April 6, 2013 from 8:30 am to 3 pm. Spots are $15 which includes 1 table.

Danville Clean Up


Danville Clean Up week will be April 8-13, 2013, starting at 8 a.m. Come and help clean up our town. We will haul away appliances, trash, pick up litter on the streets, etc. Meet at the Danville Community Center at 8 a.m. For more information, call 304-369-7050.


ZUMBATHON CHAIRTY EVENT


The Madison-Danville Jaycees are having a Zumbathon on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Madison Civic Center.


Advanced regsitration is $15 and includes a free t-shirt. Advanced registration ends April 13; after this date, registration increases to $20.


Other activites present include a 50/50 raffle, a Chinese Auction, and healthy lunches available for purchase.

BMH Auxiliary Scholarships


Boone Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has set a deadline date for their 2013 scholarships. The auxiliary presents 7 scholarships per year for students who are pursuing an education in the medical field.


The scholarships include three $1,000 scholarships and four $500 dollar scholarships. You must have already been accepted into a medical program of study to be approved. The deadline for the submission of the applications is April 30, 2013.


The recipients will be notified before May 31, 2013.


You may pick up an application at the auxiliary desk at Boone Memorial Hospital on Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They should be returned to the same location before April 30th.


These scholarships are not limited to high school students, anyone pursuing a degree, or certification, in a medical field will be considered.

The Madison FD is looking for public relations opportunities in the Madison Fire Protection District. L.E.P.C. quarterly meeting


The quarterly meeting of the Boone County Local Emergency Planning Committee ( L.E.P.C.) will be at the Park Avenue Restaurant on March 29 at 1 pm. Lunch is on your own. All members are encouraged to attend and please bring a guest. Scott Smith from the American Red Cross will be our guest speaker. We will also be talking about the amateur radio operators in the county.


BCARSE meeting


The Boone County Assn. of Retired School Employees (BCARSE) next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 17. The meeting will be called to order at 10 a.m. at the Park Ave. Restaurant in Danville.


Trina Hager will present the program with information concerning the needs of home-bound patients. Recently, changes concerning these needs have been changed. She will bring us up to date on all of this available coverage.


Jenny Light, president, urges members to attend. Plan now to attend and enjoy the food, fun and fellowship. Door prizes will be awarded. 50/50 will be available. Judy Micheals will present the devotional.


Foster homes and volunteers needed


Want to do something very rewarding? Boone County Animal Rescue Coalition (BARC) needs foster homes for dogs (short & long term) of different breeds, and sizes, including mixed breeds, etc. (and a few cats). We also need volunteer drivers to help transport dogs to rescue groups and help with fundraising. Please contact Cheri at barc_wv@yahoo.com


Appalachian Council Head Start/Pre-K


Appalachian Council Head Start is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 school year. Children must be 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2013. Services are available for children with disabilities or special needs.


There is no fee required for entrance into Head Start.


Information needed to apply includes verification of income for a 12 month period, birth certificate from vital statistics, immunization record and social security card (optional).


Head Start/Pre-K locations include Brookview Elementary, Danville Head Start, Prenter Head Start, Racine Head Start, Ramage Elementary, Wharton Elementary and Whitesville Elementary.

Free admission to Coal Scrip Show


The National Scrip Collectors Association, a not for profit group, will be holding its semi-annual show and meeting in Beckley on April 19, 2013, starting at 8 a.m. and ending at noon on the 20th. The meeting will be at the Country Inn & Suites at 2120 Harper Road in Beckley. Admission is free to the public.


Coal Scrip was the private currency of coal companies in over 612 towns in just West Virginia alone. In the mid-1950s scrip had all but disappeared as a method of labor payment. Coal scrip, like other obsolete currency, has survived and today is thriving in the hands of collectors.


At this show, there will be vendors, dealers and collectors that would offer their opinions as to the value of any scrip and maybe where to sell it, if desired.


Other mining memorabilia, artifacts, coal scrip books and catalogues usually have dealers too at the show.


Part of the purpose of the NSCA is to encourage the study and research of the history of coal mining companies as it relates to the usage of scrip tokens and the families that used it.
