In a few minutes, Boone County native Maria Gunnoe is scheduled to receive the Goldman Environmental Prize for her efforts as a grassroots environmentalist.

The Goldman Environmental Prize has been described as the Pulitzer Prize for environmentalists and aptly termed, "The Green Nobel Prize."

Gunnoe is being recognized for her work in "organizing her community to stop the disastrous process of mountaintop removal coal mining and valley fill," according to organizers of the prize.

The 2009 Goldman Environmental Prize Ceremony will be held this evening at 9 p.m. PDT.

Attendees confirmed for this evening's ceremony include Al Gore, actor Robert Redford and journalist Christiane Amanpour.
