SETH – The Sherman Lady Tide improved its record to 8-7 after starting the season on a five-game skid.

The Lady Tide has won five of its last six games.

“If you told me we would be 4-1 this week, I would have been ecstatic,” Sherman head coach Jim Henderson said. “But that loss has left a bad taste in our mouth.”

Sherman 8, Shady Spring 3

The Lady Tide jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three innings and never looked back.

"Offensively, I think we played our best game of the season,” Henderson said. “We only had one strikeout, we put the ball in play and we took advantage of errors.”

Senior third baseman Mandi Workman led the Lady Tide with a 3-for-4 day, including a two-run home run and two runs. Senior first baseman Taylor Dodrill added three hits.

Sophomore Chelsea Belcher, junior Madison Bowman and junior Jessica Hudson each had two hits. Senior Brittany Merritt and junior Brittany May added one hit apiece.

May went the distance for the Lady Tide, giving up three runs on 11 hits while striking out four.

Sherman 2, Clay County 1

The host Lady Tide trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Workman led off the final frame with a hit. Bowman then was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with no outs.

“They pulled their third baseman up, thinking we were going to bunt,” Henderson said. “They were a little surprised when we pulled the double steal.”

With runners on second and third, May grounded out for the first out of the inning, but Workman was able to cross the plate for the Lady Tide’s first run. Junior Megan Williams then drove in the game-winning run on a fielder's choice.

Workman and Bowman had Sherman's only hits.

May gave up one earned run on five hits while striking out 10 in seven innings.

Sherman 11, Clay County 0

The Lady Tide continued its winning ways with a five-inning, mercy-rule victory over the visiting Lady Panthers in the second game of a doubleheader at Seth.

“It was almost like they didn’t show up after they lost the first game,” Henderson said. “We hit the ball very well and had the defense to back it up.”

Junior Crystal Halstead went 3-for-4 with three runs. Williams was 2-for-4 with two runs. Bowman went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and a pair of RBI.

May added a pair of hits. Workman hit her fourth home run of the season. She also added one RBI and two runs.

Senior Reagan Meadows and Merritt each had a hit.

May once again got the complete-game win for the Lady Tide, giving up three hits and striking out six.

Sherman 11, James Monroe 0

May recorded her first career no-hitter, allowing no runs on no hits and striking out five.

“Brittany pitched a great game,” Henderson said. “It was great to get to see her record her first no-hitter.”

Workman led the Lady Tide with a 3-for-4 effort, adding one RBI and three runs. Williams added two hits and three runs.

Bowman added one double, one run and three RBI. Halstead and Merritt each added one hit and two runs. Hudson had one hit.

“This was the first time we had ever played them,” Henderson said. “We came out hitting the ball and never looked back.”

Liberty-Raleigh 6, Sherman 2

The host Lady Raiders scored all of their runs in the first two innings.

A late two-run rally by the Lady Tide in the seventh was not enough as the maroon-and-gold squad suffered its only loss last week.

“This was the first time that Liberty has ever beaten us in the 15 years we have played,” Henderson said. “Coach Workman has done very well with his kids and they came out and played a good game.”

May picked up her only loss in the past five games, giving up six runs on seven hits while striking out 11.

The Lady Tide defense committed four errors.

“They came out and outplayed us,” Henderson said. “After the first couple innings, we calmed down, but it was too little, too late.

"I told the girls after the game that every time they step on that field, they have to be ready to play ball or they will get beat.”

Bowman added one hit and two RBI. Dodrill had Sherman's only other hit.

Williams and Halstead scored the Lady Tide's only runs.

Sherman visited Independence on Tuesday. Results for that game were unavailable for this week's issue but will be published in next week's edition.

Sherman will visit Fayetteville for a doubleheader on Thursday and will travel to Liberty-Raleigh on Friday and Boone County rival Van on Saturday.
