SETH – Don’t tell the Sherman Lady Tide softball players that it was a wet week full of cancellations.

They might not know what you are talking about. The maroon-and-gold squad managed to play seven games on the week, including three doubleheaders.

Despite its tiring schedule, the Lady Tide went 4-3 on the week.

Sherman 8, Van 1

The teams stalemated for the first three innings, holding each other scoreless.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Tide opened up the game, scoring seven runs and taking advantage of four errors by the Lady Bulldogs.

“It was a tight game until the fourth inning, when we broke it open,” Sherman coach Jim Henderson said. “We got some hits and capitalized on some mistakes to take the lead.”

Junior Jessica Hudson led the Lady Tide with three hits, including a double and two RBI. Junior Brittany May added two hits, including a double and an RBI. Senior Mandi Workman added two hits, including a double.

Junior Megan Williams added a pair of hits. Senior Brittany Merritt added a hit and two RBI. Senior Taylor Dodrill and junior Madison Bowman each added a hit.

Senior Meghan Pauley scored the Lady Bulldogs' only run, hitting a solo home run in the top of the sixth, her third of the season. Senior Jacklyn Keough and senior Erin Beth Cook each added a hit.

“We played them close for the first few innings,” Van coach Joey Lares said. “We made a few errors and got behind and couldn’t catch up.”

May went the distance for the Lady Tide, picking up her 12th win on the year. She gave up one run on three hits and struck out 10 Bulldog batters.

Van’s Kristen Jarrell gave up eight runs on 12 hits while striking out five.

Sherman 7, Fayetteville 1

The Lady Tide amassed seven runs on six hits to take the win back to Seth.

“The girls played well,” Henderson said. “Everybody got an opportunity to play and it was a great learning experience for them.”

Dodrill added a double, one RBI and one run. Williams added a hit and two runs. Hudson and Belcher each added a hit.

Sherman 4, Liberty-Raleigh 2

The Lady Tide took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never relinquished it as the Boone County squad took revenge on its Raleigh County visitors, who posted a 6-0 victory in the teams' previous meeting.

"They beat up on us last weekend,” Henderson said. “We came out and played solid defense and hit the ball well. A couple errors luckily didn’t hurt us and we came away with a nice win.”

Bowman ripped a solo homerun, giving her the all-time RBI record for the Lady Tide. She also will have next year to build on her record-setting mark.

Meadows added a pair of hits, including a double. Williams added a hit, one RBI and one run. Hudson added an RBI triple. May added an RBI double. Halstead added one hit.

May picked up yet another win for the Lady Tide, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out 13 batters.

Independence 13, Sherman 3 (6 innings)

The Lady Tide committed 10 errors in the contest, leading to the overwhelming loss.

“We committed so many errors that we didn’t give ourselves an opportunity to be in the game,” Henderson said.

Merritt went 3-3 with a double. Bowman added Sherman's only other hit, a two run home run. Halstead added a run.

May picked up the loss, giving up two earned runs on seven hits while striking out four batters.

Independence 7, Sherman 6

Williams pitched the first three innings for the Lady Tide, giving up six runs on six hits and striking out one.

May came in on relief and gave up one run on two hits while striking out three.

“We just didn’t back our pitchers,” Henderson said. “Two or three runs can win the game with solid defense, but it seemed like we left our gloves at home.”

Bowman added a pair of hits, one RBI and one run. Halstead and Williams each added two hits and one run scored. Hudson and Dodrill each added one hit, one RBI and one run. Merritt added a hit.

Herbert Hoover 4, Sherman 3

The Lady Tide took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second but could not hang on as the Lady Huskies outscored them 4-1 in the remaining five innings.

“Our defense let us down,” Henderson said. “Three of their runs were unearned. We could have won this game if we played both sides of the plate.”

Williams added two hits. Merritt added one hit and one RBI. Bowman added a hit. Hudson scored two runs.

May gave up one earned run on three hits while striking out six.

Sherman was scheduled to wrap up the regular season with a trip to Logan on Monday. Results for that game were unavailable but will be published in next week’s issue.

The sectional tournament opens up on Thursday, when Sherman will travel to Poca to take on the Lady Dots in a doubleheader. The Lady Tide lost a 6-0 decision March 31 in the teams' previous meeting, but, as Henderson states, his squad has improved since then.

“When we played them in the beginning of the season, it was only our second game and by that time, they had played seven or eight," he said. “We are a much better team, but I’m sure they have improved, too.”

Sherman and Poca are the only teams in Class AA Region IV, Section II because of Winfield's move to Class AAA.

“We have always had tough sectional matchups with them,” Henderson said. “Whoever has a better day will be the winner.”
