For a Hill Lane family, last weekend was going to be three days to remember.
Tim and Angie Hill, and their children were leaving for a camping trip when they discovered their house was on fire.
In the last few years, Tim Hill survived back surgery that ended his long career at Kroger.
That was followed up by bout with cancer recently, then a fire that left his family without a place to live.
"It was strange, but I looked out the window at the last minute, and saw the smoke."
By the time Hill called 911, the house could not be saved
"We don’t have any fire hydrants anywhere in Hill Lane or anywhere near there for that matter," Hill said.
"The fire departments had to truck in water from down the road. While one tanker was spraying another was off down the road refilling."
Units from the Madison, Danville and Morrisvale Volunteer Fire Department battled the blaze with assistance from the nearby Chapmanville Fire Department, who provided tanker support.
"We were able to run across the yard and get the 4-wheelers, some tools and clothes out of the garage, but we lost most everything else," he said.
"We lost all our guns in the fire, and the pictures of our kids and most everything else." Hill said he, along with friends and family members built the two-story,
13-room house, which was the last residence in the hollow.
The structure rekindled on Saturday morning.
"The fire department told me that we might as well just let it burn because it will keep restarting until the house runs out of
flammable materials."
Luckily, the family had
insurance.
"Our insurance agent told us we didn’t have anything to worry about."
While he acknowledged that the lack of fire hydrants would not have mattered in their case, "sooner or later, the lack of city water is going get someone hurt."
This problem may be solved in the near future for at least some Corridor G.
