FALLING ROCK — Leave it to Sherman’s Jake Rollo to save the day not once, not twice, but thrice on

back-to-back-to-back plays Friday against Herbert Hoover.

His penchant for making the right play at the right time is uncanny, not to

mention one of the reasons he quickly is establishing himself as one of

West Virginia’s best all-around high school football players.

Rollo showed off his skills in the Tide's 34-30 victory over the Huskies.

The Class AA No. 6 Tide (3-0) led

34-22 when Colby Treadway punted to the Huskies (1-3), who took over at their 42-yard line with 1:06 remaining in the game.

Jamie Hurd hit Zack Thaxton for a

58-yard touchdown pass 20 seconds later, then found Patrick Ryan for a

two-point conversion pass to cut Sherman's advantage to 34-30.

It was the only second-half score for the Huskies, who then recovered an onside kick that bounced off Rollo. Kaine Daugherty fell on the football for Herbert Hoover.

“That onside kick was my fault,” said Rollo, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound senior who starts at wide receiver, free safety, kick returner and punt returner. “It hit me. That guy knocked the crap out of me, and I dropped the ball. We made up for it.”

Actually, he made up for it.

Herbert Hoover took over at Sherman’s 45 with 42.5 seconds remaining.

Hurd threw an incomplete pass on first down and an interception to Rollo on

second down, but a defensive holding penalty against the Tide negated the latter and moved the ball to the 30 with 28.5 seconds remaining.

Sherman committed 16 penalties for 115 yards.

It appeared Hurd had burnt the Tide on the next play, throwing what would have been a go-ahead touchdown toss to Josh Jordan. But Rollo came from his secondary spot and broke up the pass.

Rollo sealed the deal on the next play, intercepting Hurd's overthrown pass in the end zone with 13 seconds remaining.

It was Rollo's second pick against the Huskies.

Asked if he was trying to redeem

himself after the botched onside kick, Rollo said: “I wouldn’t say redemption. I just do what I can to help the team. That's all I care about.”

An All-State performer in football, basketball and track, Rollo finished with 10 receptions for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

He also returned a kickoff 82 yards for another score, providing the game’s most exciting play three minutes into the first quarter.

The teams and their shotgun spread offenses swapped touchdowns in the first half, when the lead changed hands five times before Sherman settled for a 27-22 halftime advantage.

Herbert Hoover scored on the game’s first possession, with Hurd capping a seven-play, 66-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to give the Huskies a 6-0 lead with 9:28 remaining in the first quarter.

Rollo fielded the ensuing kickoff at the Tide’s 18 and headed up the middle. He sprinted left to the visiting sideline, where a host of Huskies were waiting. He then reversed field and sprinted to the home sideline, where he raced untouched to the end zone after a couple of big blocks from Jonathan Bowman and Justin Woodrum sprung him.

David Chapman added the extra point to give the Tide a 7-6 lead with 9:06 remaining in the first quarter.

Sherman struck again on its third

possession, a seven-play, 80-yard drive capped by Treadway’s 45-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Boulet with 2:17 left in the first quarter.

Herbert Hoover responded with a

six-play, 63-yard drive culminated with Hurd’s 40-yard touchdown pass to Robbie Kidd. Hurd and Kidd also connected on the two-point conversion pass, which gave the Huskies a 14-13 lead with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Treadway found Rollo for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 8:03 left in the second quarter, capping a four-play, 54-yard drive. Chapman again added the extra point to give the Tide a

20-14 edge.

That lead lasted only one play and 15 seconds, however, as Hurd scored on a 51-yard touchdown run with 7:48 remaining before halftime. Hurd hit Jordan for the two-point conversion pass and a 22-20 advantage.

Sherman took control on its last possession of the first half and its first possession of the second half.

Both ended with 10-yard touchdown passes from Treadway — the first to Rollo with 38.6

seconds left in the second quarter and the second to Boulet with 7:03 remaining in the third quarter — and extra points by Chapman.

"We didn't play very well in the first quarter, and we didn't play very well in the last minute or minute and a half," said Sherman coach Shann Elkins, whose team allowed 351 total yards (150 rushing and 201 passing).

"We had opportunities

defensively to stop them, and we had opportunities offensively to put it away, and we just didn't do it. It's as simple as that.

"That's a pretty good football team. They have played Wayne, they have played Ravenswood, they have played Chapmanville. They're better than what their record indicates.

"We have won some pretty ones and some ugly ones. This was ugly enough, but we're happy with it."

Treadway completed 22-of-34 passes for 244 yards for the rolling Tide.

"Colby played amazing," Rollo said of his fellow senior standout.

"Perfect throws. On the money. Everything was right there, catchable, and where I could get it and nobody else could."

Boulet finished with four catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

Jake Halstead added 54 yards on seven catches but only 42 yards on 22 carries. Halstead and Sherman entered the game averaging 206 and 326 rushing yards per game, respectively.

The Tide managed only 49 yards on 31 carries against the Huskies.

"The running game, that's on our films," Rollo said. "That's what they had. We didn't throw the ball hardly none in the first two games.

"Their defense, they were putting seven or eight guys in the box. They didn't have enough to cover our receivers, which left us open for those nickels and dimes all night."

Sherman now turns its attention to Liberty Raleigh and the Whitesville State Bank Bowl. The Tide will welcome the Raiders to Zontini Field on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

It will be the first home game for Sherman, which opened the season with three consecutive road games.

"We're happy to be 3-0 and come home and get off the road," Elkins said. "We look forward to playing there.

"We have a tough team in Liberty Raleigh. It's going to be another big game and another big opportunity. It will be a big-time atmosphere, too. The guys with the Whitesville State Bank Bowl do a great job in creating that. We're going to go home and try to get us another one."

Sherman is aiming for its first appearance in the state playoffs since 2004. A victory over its Raleigh County rival would help the Boone County team achieve its goal.

"Right now, all the wins are going to build on each other," Elkins said. "They're all great at this point, but we have a lot of work to do on offense and we have a lot of work to do on defense."

Liberty Raleigh (2-1) is coming off a 57-8 win over Mount View (0-3).
