Sgt. Major (retired) Robert Clyde Mason, son of Lake Erie Cline and Harry Clyde Mason, and Evelyn Hatfield Mason, daughter of Marvin Hatfield and Arizona Barker Lee, will be buried with military honors 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 at Memory Gardens, Low Gap Road, Madison.
The Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578 of Madison, will conduct the military graveside rites. Rev. Roger Tinnell of the Madison Baptist Church will officiate.
Evelyn's parents, Arizona and C.F. Lee, were members of Madison Baptist Church for many years. Robert and Evelyn had two daughters: Patricia (husband Ted Gradt) from Chicago, Ill., and Peggy (husband John Dowling), from Tampa, Fla.
Joining them at the graveside rites will be Evelyn's nieces and nephew: Jeannie Hatfield Quinn from Pittsburgh, Pa.; Jim and Nancy Hatfield from Charlotte, N.C.; and Melissa Lee Sebok from Alexandria, Va., as well as cousins: Larry and Sandra Barker from Madison; Buddy and Barbara Woodrum from Ripley; and Ronnie Clendenen and Jeannie Lanyi from Racine. Evelyn's brother was A.J. Hatfield and her sister, Virginia Lee Sebok.
Robert grew up in Scarboro. Childhood friends, W.D. Sharp from Marlington and Margaret Errington Callaghan from Summerville, hope to attend. His nephew, Butch and Joan Johnson from Riva, Maryland and sister, Doris Jean Shaver, her daughter and grandchildren from Munroe, Ohio will be present.
Evelyn's dear childhood friends — Lucy Lewis from Charleston, and Indra Clendenen from Racine, also plan to be present. The family is especially pleased that our good friends, Ronnie and Shirley Walker from Danville, will be with them as well. Lunch will follow at the Park Avenue Diner in Danville.

Charles Clyde Cabell
Charles Clyde Cabell, 70, of Quinland, W.Va., died on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 after a long illness at Boone Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 28, 1939 to the late Joseph Bethel and Ethel (Miller) Cabell Nicastro of Foster, and Bucyrus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Cabell from Kentucky and his son, Tony Cabell of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Left behind to cherish his memory is his wife of 51 years, Norma Jean (Burns) Cabell and their two children and spouses, Debra and Ray Peters and Chuck and Amanda Cabell, both of Quinland, and daughter-in-law, Linda Cabell, also of Quinland. He is also survived by his three brothers and their spouses, J.B. and Carol, Kermit and Charlotte, and Ward and Marty Cabell and one sister and her spouse, Bea and Charlie Cochran.
Charles was also survived by his brother and sister in laws, Edward and Emma Burns of Quinland, Dorothy Burns of Quinland, James Burns of Madison, Deloris Burns Cox of Ohio, and Virginia Burns of Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his brothers in law, Paul Burns, Harold Burns, and Woodrow Burns .
He will be greatly missed by his six grandchildren, Candice and her husband, Josh Sharps, Nick Cabell, Whitney Rae Peters, Cortney and her husband, Reuben Browning, Zach Peters, and Alex Cabell; his great-grandchildren, Jayden and Cayden Sharps; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was employed by Eastern Associated Coal Corp. — Harris Mine until he became disabled in the early 70s. He was a member of the UMWA. He enjoyed farming, fishing, cooking, being with his family, and his Friday night card game with J.D. and Donna June Loftis. He was the best Peanut Butter Fudge maker in the world. He will be remembered for his good humor, and for always knowing the newest joke. He enjoyed watching Survivor, Big Brother, and Judge Judy.
Special thanks to Debbie Shaikh, his caregiver, Earl Balentine, a close friend and helper, and the doctors, nurses, and staff of Boone Memorial Hospital.
In honor of Charles’ wishes, he was cremated. There was a private family graveside service held at the Perdue Cemetery at Foster on Sunday Oct. 11, 2009.
Paul Richard Halstead
Paul Richard Halstead, 70, of Drawdy, born Dec. 24, 1938, passed away after a six-month battle with cancer on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at home with family.
Richard graduated from Sherman High School in 1958 and served four years in the U.S. Navy. He coached Seth Midget League Football for four years and Pee Wee League Baseball. He worked many years at Westmoreland, retired from Cannelton in 1994, and was a member of UMWA for 28 1/2 years.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Chephie (Lafferty) Halstead; brothers, Charles and Delmar Halstead; and sister, Betty Atkins.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his former wife and mother of his three kids, Ruth Ann; his sons, Jerry Halstead of Drawdy and Jimmy Halstead of Comfort; and daughter, Lori Keeney of Bloomingrose. Richard had four grandchildren, Payton and Audrey Halstead and Andrew and Amanda Keeney. Surviving brothers are Elmer and Henry Halstead of Drawdy and Gene Halstead of Charleston.
Funeral services were held on Oct. 7 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with Minister John Steele officiating. Burial followed at Harless Cemetery, Drawdy.
Gerald Thomas Conner
Gerald Thomas Conner, 72, of Bias Branch, Jeffrey, was a son of the late Arlie and Lorraine Conner on Nov. 8, 1936, in McComas and passed this life on Oct. 5, 2009, after a short illness.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Emmitt; and an infant daughter, Sheila Rae.
He graduated from Matoaka High School. He retired from Eastern Associate Coal Kopperston 1 Mine and Boone County Maintenance Department. He served in the United States Army and was a member of UMWA Local 7604, COMPACT, and American Legion Post 87. He was a past member of the Democrat Executive Committee.
He was a faithful believer in Jesus Christ of the Holiness faith.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Alice Gail; special son, Rodney at home; daughters, Beverley Castro of Mocksville, N.C., and Diane Goins of Peterstown; sister, Eupha Ellison of Princeton; brothers, Harold Conner of Princeton, Berkely Leroy of McGraws and Tom of Beckley; several nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and godchildren, Capt. Thomas Smith II of Elkview, Jennifer Smith Proctor of Calvin, Jessica Lea Smith of Supply, N.C., and Katherine Johnson and Larry Michael Dotson II of Ottawa.
Graveside services were held on Oct. 8 by the Rev. Ronnie Gibson in Memory Gardens, Low Gap, under the direction of Handley Funeral Home.
Charla Rakes Handley
Charla Jean Rakes Handley, 35, of Hamlin and Danville died suddenly on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009.
She was born Jan. 21, 1974, in Logan to Lena Mae “Beck” Adkins Rakes and the late Herman Chesley Rakes. She was also preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Ava Lucille Adkins.
She was a devoted wife and mother, a 1992 graduate of Harts High School and class president, owner of CJ’s Spit Shine-Car Detailing Shop, a member of Ramage Elementary PTO, a
volunteer STAGE Mom, and coach of Handley Angels girls softball team. She was on the board of directors of Danville Panther Midget League Football and she attended Madison Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, J.T. Handley, and their two children, John Thomas “JJ” Handley Jr. and Jenna Taylor Handley; mother, Beck Rakes of Danville; one brother, Jeff Rakes; and one sister and her husband, Linda and Ray Wheatley of Manila.
Funeral services were held on Oct. 9 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with Dr. Frank Frye officiating. Burial followed at Danville Memorial Park, Danville.

Florence M. Bailey, 79, of Lake, formerly of Chapmanville, died Oct. 8, 2009. Funeral services were held on Oct. 13 at Freeman Funeral Home, Chapmanville.
Audrey Billups
Audrey Billups, 70, of Six Mile Road, Danville, died Oct. 8, 2009, at Trinity Healthcare Service of Logan.
She was born Aug. 19, 1939, at Woodville in Lincoln County and was a daughter of the late Frank and Alice Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sonny Billups; daughter, Connie Billups; brothers, Adrain Smith and Yolivon Smith; and sisters, Betty Barrickman and Varleen Smith.
She is survived by four daughters and their husbands, Kathy and George Elkins of Danville, Judy and Butch Seay of Ft. Worth, Texas, Jean and Quintin Harless and Becky and Greg Spears, all of Danville; and one son and his wife, Jerry and Mary Billups of Danville; three sisters, Olivian Harless of Sandyville, and Kay Kelly and Judy Payne, both of Ripley; three
brothers, Hermon Smith of Sandyville, Larry Smith of Whitesville and Bethal Smith of Sandyville; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Oct. 12 at at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with Jack Casey officiating. Burial followed at McNeely Cemetery, Woodville.
Leva “Dollie” Bell
Leva “Dollie” Bell, 91, of Danville passed away on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at Boone Nursing and Rehabilitation, Danville.
She was born May 28, 1918, and was a daughter of the late Joseph and Eliza Roberts Hager. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Bell.
She is survived by special nieces, Linda Miller of South Charleston and Diana Holstein of Danville; and several additional nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Oct. 11 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with the Rev. John Barker officiating. Burial followed at Memory Gardens, Madison.
