SETH — A strong showing in the second quarter was more than enough for the Sherman Tide to remain undefeated Friday night with a 36-6 victory over the visiting Midland Trail Patriots.

The Class AA Tide improved to 7-0. The Class A Patriots dropped to 0-7.

No. 1 Sherman scored seven points in the opening period and added 29 points in the second quarter to conclude its scoring before the intermission.

Junior tailback Jake Halstead scored on runs of 55 and 35 yards with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter and 11:36 remaining in the second quarter, respectively.

Halstead finished with 140 yards and two scores on 12 carries.

Senior quarterback Colby Treadway had a hand in the Tide’s final three touchdowns.

Treadway connected with senior wide receiver Tyler Boulet on a

12-yard touchdown pass with 9:29 left before halftime. He also scored on runs of 9 and 47 yards with 4:46 and 1:01 remaining in the second quarter, respectively.

Treadway completed 4-of-8 passes for 71 yards and one touchdown. He also carried seven times for 95 yards and two scores.

Boulet’s touchdown catch was his only reception.

Senior wide receivers Jake Rollo (two catches for 35 yards) and Jeff Cooper (one catch for 24 yards) accounted for the rest of the Tide’s receptions.

Junior kicker David Chapman made all four of his extra point attempts. Chapman would have had a fifth attempt, but junior holder Zach Heaver corralled a bad snap and scrambled into the end zone for a two-point conversion after the Tide already had been penalized

5 yards for delay of game.

“We were inside two days and outside two days because of the weather,” Sherman coach Shann Elkins said.

“We were limited physically, but we were prepared mentally. Everybody knew they were 0-6 and we were 6-0. We talked to our guys about how mature we had to be. We had to go out there and do what we have to do.

“We were a little rusty in the first quarter. We had guys open, but we just didn’t hit them. We had guys miss some blocks they should have made. We knocked some of the rust off in the second quarter. We played really well.”

The Tide limited the Patriots to 61 total yards (53 rushing and 8 passing) and only four first downs, two of which came on penalties.

Senior linebacker Jonathan Bowman led the Tide with 11 tackles. Junior linebacker Mattlee Bassham had seven stops.

Senior linebacker Cody Santonio had five stops, including two tackles for loss. Chapman, who also is a two-way lineman, also made five tackles.

Heaver, Rollo and junior

cornerback Justin Woodrum each had an interception for the Tide, which might drop one or two spots in the state playoff ratings this week despite its seventh

consecutive victory, according to unofficial calculations.

Sherman has allowed 41 points in its past four games, with only 13 of those (all by Sissonville) coming against its first-string defense.

“We have played some really good defense the past four games,” Elkins said.

“We have played good

fundamentally, and we have had great technique.”

The teams agreed to use a

running clock in the second half.

“We were done by 9:30,” said Elkins, whose team used its junior varsity players after halftime. “That’s unusual for us.”

Sherman faces a similar scenario this week when it visits Tug Valley on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

“We have to have the same mindset as last week,” Elkins said. “We have to focus on what we’re doing, not who we’re playing. They have responded well to that.”

Tug Valley (0-7) is coming off a 47-0 loss to No. 10 Chapmanville (5-2).
