Rev. Vibert Dickens

Rev. Vibert Dickens, 78, of Dobson passed away Monday, Nov. 9, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center.  

Rev. Dickens was born in Naoma on April 17, 1931 to the late Pete and Dessie Cooper Dickens. 

Rev. Dickens served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War; retired from the coal mines and

ministered in many churches during the last 40 years. 

Vibert is

survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Violet Spurlock Dickens of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and David Gentry of Elkin, Robin and Kevin Brickell of Siloam; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Priscilla Dickens of Beckley; grandchildren and spouse, Terra and Michael Parker of Ararat, N.C., Derek Dickens of Beckley, Austin, Ryan, and Ashley Brickell all of Siloam; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jonathan and Joanna Parker and Morgan Riley Dickens; one sister, Barbara Peters of Beckley; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy and Linda Dickens of Naoma, and Denny and Clarie Dickens of Wisconsin. 

In addition to his parents, Rev. Dickens was preceded in death by three brothers, Pete (Junior), Clyde and Roy Dickens. 

Funeral services were held on Nov. 12 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Ray Hutson, Rev. Danny Gilifilen and Rev. Randy Parrish.  Burial followed at Freedom Gospel Church Cemetery on Old Rockford Rd.

James Edward Hoosier

James Edward “Eddie” Hoosier, 62, of Julian passed away Nov. 12, 2009, at his home after a battle with cancer.

He was an Army veteran and served in the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of Daniel Boone Post 5578 of Madison, West Virginia. He was a former coal miner and a member of UMWA.

James was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. James Robert Hoosier and Norma June Stump Hoosier.

He is survived by one son, James Michael Hoosier of Camp Creek, Julian; five sisters and their husbands, Gloria and Jim Blevins of South Man, Judy and John Chandler of Yawkey, Karen Clark and James of Julian, Debbie and Troy Walker of Alum Creek and Kim and Randy Ferrell of Madison; five brothers and their wives, Roger and Linda of Julian, David of Uneeda, Donald and Debbie of South Man, Randy of Alkol, and Greg of Julian; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Huntington VA Medical Center for all the care and

compassion he received during his illness.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 15 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with the Rev. Charles Vance officiating. Burial will be at a later date with

honorary pallbearers, Richard Stump, Jim Blevins, Bobby Stump and Randy Ferrell. His nephews will serve as active

pallbearers.

Gwinn D. Bryant II

Gwinn D. Bryant II, 44, of Lake died Nov. 9, 2009.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 14 at Freeman Funeral Home, Chapmanville. Burial

followed at Guyan Memorial Gardens, Pecks Mill.

Jimmy Dale Dillon

Jimmy Dale Dillon, 53, of Toneys Branch Road, Bloomingrose, passed away at his home on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009.

He was born in Kanawha County on Feb. 19, 1956, and was a son of the late Basil Dillon and Zella Barker.

He worked as a roof bolter in the coal mines.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Clark Dillon. Other family members include, Amber Dawn, Matthew Allen, Phillip Carol Smith, Johnny Roger Dillon, Larry Eugene Dillon, Debra Ann Workman, Brenda Gale Tooath; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 13 at Pineview Cemetery Mausoleum, Orgas, with the Rev. David Clark officiating and singing provided by Junior Perdue. Burial followed at Pineview Cemetery.

Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, is in charge of arrangements.

Russell N. White

Russell N. White, 65, of Powell Creek, Danville, became a guardian angel on Nov. 10, 2009.

He was born Aug. 17, 1944, in Boone County and was a son of the late Oma Grathel Perry. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ronald “Ronnie” White of West Virginia, Daniel “Danny” Green of Ohio and Glenna Ray Cantley of North Carolina.

He was a retired truck driver who devoted his life to his family. He was an Army veteran from 1965 through 1967 when he served in the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Katherine “Kittie” White; son, Russell “Scott” White; and honorary daughter-in-law, Robbin Jeffery, all of Powell Creek; daughters, Jacqueline “Jackie” Turner of Danville and Tammie Toler and son-in-law, Jeremy Toler, of Madison; granddaughter, Hope Turner of Danville; and grandsons, Quentan Toler and Elijah Toler of Madison.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 13 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with the Rev. Russell Thompson officiating. Military graveside rites were

performed by Daniel Boone Post VFW 5578, Madison, West Virginia. Burial follow at Memory Gardens, Madison.

Malissa Belle Miller Bragg

Malissa Belle Miller Bragg, 96, of Lynch Station, Va., passed away Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009.

She was born Aug. 8, 1914, in Turtle Creek, Boone County, and was preceded in death by her husband, E. Carl; and a son, Darrel.

She was a longtime resident of Jeffrey. For many years, Malissa and Carl were owners/operators of Carl’s Drive-In and Service Station in Jeffrey. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 121, Madison.

Survivors include her son, Fred; daughter-in-law, Karen; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 14 at Memory Gardens, Madison, with the Rev. Tom Bias officiating.

Handley Funeral Home, Madison, is in charge of

arrangements.

Eugene “Gene” E. Lewis

Eugene “Gene” E. Lewis, 81, of Whitesville passed away Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

Gene was born March 8, 1928. He was the son of the late Ulysses and Elizabeth Lewis. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ulysses Jr. and James Robert; a sister, Ruth Carol Jarrell; wife, Onamega; and a son, Eugene E. “Louie” Lewis Jr.

Gene was a lifelong resident of the Whitesville area. He retired in June 1990 from CSX where he was yardmaster at the Elk Run Junction with 46 years of service. He was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Gene was active in the

community and served the region in many positions.

He was Justice of the Peace in Whitesville from 1961 to 1971. He also served on the Boone County Commission from 1971 to 1979, where he was

instrumental in securing many projects to benefit the community, which included the parks at Racine and Whitesville. Gene was also active in local organizations.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 75, the VFW, where he was

quartermaster for Post 4387, Moose Lodge, Whitesville, and the Rotary Club, where he was a “Paul Harris Fellow.”

Gene was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Whitesville and a past president and charter member of the Presbyterian Men's Association.

He is survived by a sister, Betty June Proctor and her husband, Howard, of Sylvester; loving companion, Mary Jane Harless of Whitesville; a daughter, Sonja Brown of Whitesville; a son, Stephen Lewis and his wife, Marsha, of Whitesville; a

daughter-in-law, Cheryl Lewis of Mineral Wells; and five

grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 17 at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Ricky Peters officiating. Burial followed at Pineview Cemetery, Orgas.

Jake Henry III

Jake Henry III, of Ottawa, died Nov. 12, 2009, at home after a sudden illness.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jake Henry Jr.

Jake is survived by his mother, June Stollings Henry of Ottawa; daughters, Ashley Ulbrich of Ottawa, Kayla Henry of Low Gap and Brooklyn Henry at home with her mother, Angela Malcomb; sister, Elizabeth, her husband, Jim, and children, Jason, Jacob and Jaimie Blosser; one grandchild, Dylan Ulbrich of Ottawa; and aunts, Martha Hammerschmidt, Pamela Franklino and Clara Tichenor.

Special thanks go to cousin and friend, David Roberts, and many relatives and friends. He will be sadly missed by everyone.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 15 at Stevens Funeral Home, Madison, with the Rev. Don Austin and Ralph Caudill. Burial followed at Ball Cemetery, Ottawa.

John E. Kirk

John E. Kirk, 78, of Nellis went to rest with the Lord

Nov. 12, 2009, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Evelyn Kirk; son, Paul Kirk and his wife Shannon of South Charleston; grandchildren, Destiny and Gage Kirk; brothers, Jack and Phillip Kirk; and sisters, Jane Ann Javins and Alice Barker.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 17 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. William K. Berry officiating. Burial followed at Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney.

Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home is serving the Kirk family.
