Mrs. Sadie Spratt Browning, 93, of St. Marys, Ga., formerly of Cabell and Boone counties, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at Hospice of Golden Isles, Brunswick, Ga.
Born May 10, 1916, in Baileysville, W.Va, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Spratt, of Logan County, W.Va. She was married to William B. Browning until his death in 1947.
She was preceded in death by three sisters; and one brother.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a graduate of Marshall College, and taught elementary school in Boone County, W.Va., Florida, Michigan, Kentucky, and California. She was active in
several civic organizations in Madison, W.Va., where she resided and worked for many years. Madison United Methodist Church was her church home while living in Boone County. She retired from teaching after thirty years of service in various school systems.
Her passion for travel was a lifelong past time. Her family and friends enjoyed her many stories about interesting places visited and people she had met.
She is survived by her son, Hugh Browning III and his wife Bonnie of St. Marys, Ga.;
two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 2 at Chapman's Mortuary, with the Rev. Julia Bolling officiating. Burial followed at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.
Jerry D. Rayburn
Jerry D. Rayburn, 67, of Lake died Nov. 28, 2009. Funeral
services were held on Dec. 3 at Logan Church of the Nazarene, Logan. Burial followed at Highland Memory Gardens, Godby.
Leonard “Sammy” Ball
Leonard “Sammy” Ball, 72, of Meadow Fork passed away Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, after a short illness.
Sammy was born Aug. 15, 1937. He was the son of the late David French and Sybil J. Ball of Meadow Fork. He was also
preceded in death by a brother, David F. Ball Jr.; and a sister, Loretta Workman.
He is survived by brothers, Roger G. and Phillip A. Ball of Elizabeth, Genial Ball of Fraziers Bottom, and Michael (Phyllis) Ball of Beckley; and sisters, Louise White of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Betty (Bob) Thompson of Fraziers Bottom, Lucy VanKirk of Dennison, Ohio, Kathy (Russ) Wright of Springboro, Ohio, and Janie (Kip) Stevens of Stanley, N.C.
He will be sadly missed by all.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 3 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville. Burial followed at Family Gardens, Madison.
Flora M. Arthur Ulbrich
Flora M. Arthur Ulbrich, of Danville, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, with family by her side.
Born June 6, 1919, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garrett W. Ulbrich; son, James G. Ulbrich; and daughter, Judy Emma Ulbrich.
Survivors include her son, Dallas Ulbrich of Alabama; daughters, Freeda Mullins of Jeffrey and Ann Price of Danville; sons-in-law, Winford Mullins and Fred Price; daughter-in-law, Audrey Ulbrich; grandchildren, Travis, Jeremy, Jimmy, and Annette “Sissy” Ulbrich, Tamara Moore, and Wendy Lynn Hutchinson;
several great-grandchildren; and great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Hutchinson, the love of her life.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 3 at the Jim Ball Cemetery, near Ottawa, with Pastor Don Austin officiating.

George Dewayne Ellis
George Dewayne Ellis, 60, of Six Mile, Boone County, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, at Boone Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Danville.
Born Sept. 7, 1949, in Boone County, he was the son of the late Griffith O’Dell and Myrtle McNeely Ellis.
Survivors include his brothers, Lewis Ellis of Dale City, Va., Risty Ellis of Six Mile, Earl Ellis of Leetonia, Ohio, and Danny Ellis of Stafford, Va.; and sisters, Alice Gray of Charleston, S.C., Nola Jane Spencer of Hewett, and Ronnie Rice of Six Mile.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 5 at Stevens Funeral Home, Madison, with Ralph Caudill officiating. Burial followed at Family Memorial Gardens, near Madison.
Helen Louise Trail Ferrell
Helen Louise Trail Ferrell, 90, of Hewett, Boone County, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Patty’s Home Away From Home, Whitman.
Mrs. Ferrell was the daughter of the late Walter and Louise Trail. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul Ferrell; her son, Roger Ferrell; sisters, Edna Donavan, Ella Neece, Janira Solchik, and Ruth Gilpin; and brother, Bill Trail.
Helen was a member of Spencer Chapel United Methodist Church, Hewett.
Survivors include her
daughter-in-law, Kay Ferrell of Six Mile; grandsons, Scott Ferrell and wife, Sally, of Six Mile and Greg Ferrell and wife, Nancy, of Six Mile; great-grandchildren, Chrissy Ferrell of Hewett and Mandy Ferrell, David Ferrell, and Steven Ferrell, all of Six Mile; half brothers, Everet Trail of Ohio and Edward Trail of Florida; half sisters, Ernistine Berry and Dolly Warnert, both of Ohio; and nieces and nephews, Charles and Doris Thompson, Brenda Goodson, and Bobby Neece, all of Carlsbad, N.M., Rose Stone of Holden, Patty and Dave Ippolipo of Ellenton, Fla., and Debbie Williamson of Tarpon Springs, Fla. She was expecting the birth of her first great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 5 at Spencer Chapel United Methodist Church, Hewett, with the Rev. Roger McCauley officiating. Burial followed at Baldwin Cemetery, Lake.

Nancy Lea Ball
Nancy Lea Ball, 69, of Sulphur, La., formerly of Hewett, Boone County, passed away Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, in St. Patrick’s Hospital, Lake Charles, La.
Born June 7, 1940, in Hewett, she was the daughter of Ardith Ball of Hewett and the late Myrtle Aleshire Ball. In addition to her mother, Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Ball.
Nancy graduated from Scott High School, Madison, where she was crowned Miss Skyhawk in 1959. She was an employee of Westmoreland Coal Company for 18 years and enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. She was a joy to be around and was loved by everyone.
In addition to her father, she is survived by her longtime
companion and best friend, Edward Butterkoffer of Sulphur, La.; sons, Steve Ball and his wife, Amy, of Madison, Ind., and Curtis Ball and companion, Leandra, of Madison, Ind.; the love of her life, Grandson, Jesse; brother, Edward “Bud” Ball and wife, Joyce, of Hewett; sisters, Betty Franklin and husband, Dale, of Burlington, Colo., and Iva Blankenship and companion, Jim Ball, of Aurora, Colo.; nieces and nephews; and many friends. She was loved by all.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 6 at Stevens Funeral Home, Madison, with the Rev. Roger McCauley officiating. Burial
followed at the Jim Ball Cemetery, near Ottawa.
Janet F. Keffer
Janet F. Keffer, 67, of Foster died Dec. 3, 2009. Funeral

Dennis “DC” Griffith
Dennis "DC" Griffith, 95, of South Charleston passed away Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, in Lakin Hospital.
He was born Sept. 26, 1914, in Danville and was a son of the late Reldo and Martha Ball Griffith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; brothers, Keith Griffith and Kenneth Atkins; and nephews, Craig Atkins and K.M. Griffith.
DC retired from Union Carbide after 32 years service. He was a former South Charleston Council member, a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Dunbar Lodge 159 AF & AM and member of Lions Club and Odd Fellows. He was an avid outdoorsman.
He is survived by his daughters, Denise Cadle and her husband, Mike, of South Charleston and Drema Lewis and her husband, Roger, of Poca; grandchildren, D.J. Brogan and his wife, Amy, of Nitro, Michael Cadle and his wife, Tara, of Dunbar, Jessica Cadle of South Charleston,
and Ashley Brogan of Poca;
great-grandchildren, Isabella Cadle and Caden Brogan; and brother, Delmar “Deck” Atkins and his wife, Edna, of St. Albans.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Lakin Hospital for the love, care and support they gave.
A celebration of Dennis’s Life was held on Dec. 5 at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, 110 B St., St. Albans. Burial followed at Cunningham Memorial Park with military graveside rites to be conducted.
