Field Days as the school with the most winners.
Approximately 175 students competed in this year’s competition, where students competed in
solving mathematical problems that ranged from addition and subtraction to math equations
that required advanced math skills.
This year’s math Field Day was held at Madison Middle School, on Feb. 12.
Students enrolled in area elementary schools and junior high schools began their day with test instructions and a written examination.
Following a brief break, students returned to compete in estimating computations and
“mental math.”
Senior High school students followed a similar schedule during the day, with Scott High
School garnering the most trophies this year.
After three and a half hours of grueling mathematical computations, Scott High School placed first in 9th grade team winners,
followed by Sherman Senior, with 3rd place awarded to Van Senior High School.
“As you know, the World Olympics are being held in Canada. Like those great athletes,
you are representing your school here today,” said Superintendent of Boone County
School John Hudson, as he spoke to students, faculty, and parents during the start of the
awards ceremony.
Hudson thanked firstly the families in the crowded gymnasium for their support of the
many participating students.
“Your support is vital to the success of your child,” he reminded parents.
Then, Hudson gave special
recognition to the principals who were in attendance at the field day competition.
By the end of the afternoon, students from the following schools in Boone County were recognized for their academic achievement in the field of mathematics:
Madison Elementary,
Brookview, Sherman
Elementary, Ramage
Elementary, Madison Middle,
Sherman Elementary, Ashford-
Rumble, Van Jr., Sherman
Senior, Scott High, and Van
Senior High Schools.
Placing first and representing Boone County in the upcoming Math Field Day at West Virginia
Tech on March 12 from the area high schools for 2010 is Scott High School student Cory Ball.
