Last week, Tiger Cubs, cub scouts and other guests said they were impressed with the simulated coal mine where they were able to do “hands-on” activities.
These activities included using a shovel, pick and auger inside the mine.
The children also received a history lesson at the Heritage and Arts Center, as they discovered the story behind the naming of Boone County after the famous frontiersman, Daniel Boone.
The children were led through the museum by their leaders O”Dell Parsons and Michelle Howard. Tour guide Carolyn Kuhn conducting the tour of the museum and Larry Lodato conducted the tour of the Heritage and Arts Center.
Both tours were arranged by Donna Chaney.
The goal of the Museum is the “preserving [of] the heritage of the Southern WV coal fields through Miner's tools, photographs, oral history tapes, company records and other pieces of the state's mining history.”
The museum is open Monday through Friday from noon until 4 p.m.
The museum is located at 347 Main Street, Madison.
Area school groups and civic organizations are invited to tour the Coal Heritage Museum and Arts Center. To set up a tour, contact Larry Lodato at 304-369-9130.
