The Tide hosted the Van Bulldogs Monday, in what the Tide thought to be a must win game. A game that they needed to turn their season around and start climbing back out of a season-starting slump.
Both teams had their offense going from the start, scoring runs in almost every inning.
A see-saw battle all the way to the end.
Van relied on a five-run fourth inning, to give the Bulldogs the go-ahead run, and start to control the game.
The Tide would have none of that as they would score three runs in that same inning to tie the game at 6 runs apiece, heading into the later innings of the game.
The game remained close for the whole stretch, fans on their seat, ready to explode on a single hit.
The Tide only tallied one run in the fifth inning while, the Bulldogs squeezed out two runs in the sixth inning to put themselves ahead one run, heading to the seventh.
Sherman had its back against the wall, being down one run in the bottom of the seventh, with two outs. The Tide managed to get two players on base, with Senior Michael Massey on deck. Staying composed with two outs, as well as two strikes against him, Massey rocketed a three run walk-off home run.
Asking Sherman coach Jeremiah Pettry about the win, and his thoughts on if this game is going to help them turn their season around, he replied: “It was a great game, a great game for the spectators.
“People love to watch games like that,” Pettry said. “I would say it helps us, it gives us confidence, but I really don’t consider us struggling with our young bottom of the order and with a schedule like ours, its really hard to say were struggling as a team.”
After dropping to 3-10, with a 15-5 loss to the Poca Dots, Thursday, the Tide turned around with a 9-0 win over the Liberty Raleigh Raiders on Friday.
Senior Jordan Massey only allowed three hits as he fanned 15, to get Sherman the much-needed road win and improve their overall record to 4-10.
Jacob Halstead lead the Tide offense going 2-for-3, with a double and 2 RBI. Sophomore Matt Long contributed going 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple. Senior catcher Johnathan Bowman, Massey and Duncan Breeden all rounded out the Tide offense each accounting for a double.
Although suffering a loss, Van’s Loren Harshbarger jacked a grand slam, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
