Sherman came into the game with confidence after racking up two wins the previous week, with victories over in-county opponents Van and Liberty. Sherman was relying on theIR offence to stay hot, as it had been the previous week, when Sherman tallied up 25 runs in three games.
Sherman also had there ace Sophomore Matthew Long on the mound, despite battling a nagging injury for most of the season. The Tide gave a great effort, but came up short as they have many times this year. Sherman couldn’t punch in another run to match the Skyhawks 5 runs. Only scoring 4 , the Tide dropped to 4-11 on the season.
Hosting the Westside Warriors Thursday at home, things would go a lot smoother for the Tide. With veteran Senior Jordan Massey starting the game on the mound for the Tide, he knew he would do his part, the offence just had to do theirs.
Massey has been on the Tide roster for four years and has played varsity all four years. Like a crafty MLB veteran such as Tim Wakefield or Roy Holliday, Massey knows his role on the team, and having a memorable senior season before heading to college is key for him.
After giving up one run in the 1st inning and two runs in the 5th inning, Massey had complete control over the game, shutting down the Warrior offence for the majority of the game, only allowing 4 hits and striking out 10 Warriors, adding another double digit strikeout performance to his record.
The Tide offence did there part, scoring 4 runs on 8 hits. Sophomore B.D. Banks had a nice showing at the plate, going 2-3 with a double and 3 RBI’s, also accounting for the game winning hit in the 6th inning, allowing Senior Jacob Rollo to cross to plate. Junior Jake Halstead , Senior Joe Morgan as well as Senior Jordan Massey all went 2-3 on the day. Sherman’s 4-3 win, boosted their record to 5-11.
Friday, Sherman traveled to Chapmanville to take on the Tigers. Coming off Thursday win, the Tide looked get back at the Tigers after loosing 21-0, earlier in the year. Junior utility player Jacob Halstead started the game on the mound for the Tide.
Chapmanville started the game with a 2 run first inning, while the Tide got on the board in the first inning with a run of there own.
Chapmanville wouldn’t slow down for the rest of the game, scoring at least one run in each inning. Sherman battled hard and was in the contest until the fourth inning when Chapmanville blasted an 8 run inning, giving the Tide little hope for a comeback attempt.
Chapmanville’s 8 run inning, was the cause for this contest ending in the 5th inning. The Tide dropped to 5-11 on the season. This is a very balanced team, although Sherman has many Seniors on the team, there loaded with young players as well, especially in the bottom of there lineup.
If this team can come together as well as getting there young guns experience at the plate, the sky is the limit for the Tide, who has one of the hardest schedules in there region.
