A 35-year old Hewett man remains in jail for the second week on charges he stole his father’s ATV, tried to burn it, and set his parents home on fire.

A criminal complaint filed by Deputy Chad Hess stated that on May 15th he was called to a home in Hewett to a call from Danny Cook. Cook told the deputy that Jackie Lee Cook II had threatened on numerous times to burn down the home of his father, Jackie Lee Cook, Sr. Danny Cook also advised that he had observed his brother in Meadowfork earlier in the day and that he believed the man had stolen his father’s 2003 Suzuki ATV.

Shortly thereafter, deputies found Jackie Cook II hiding in an abandoned trailer in the same area. When they placed the man under arrest, they found the ATV, they smelled the odor of smoke and “accelerants” on his body and discovered that Cook II had attempted to burn the stolen ATV.

The complaint stated “upon further inspecting the ATV, it appeared that the defendant had attempted to burn the ATV by lighting the seat, opening the gas tank and stacking a tire on top of it.” The document also stated that his father inspected the ATV and confirmed it was his. The value of the stolen vehicle was set at $3,000.

In addition, units from the Spruce River Volunteer Fire Department were called to a structure fire at the parents’ home that day fighting the fire for most of the afternoon.

Cook II was charged with arson, attempted arson and grand larceny. He was arraigned before Boone County Magistrate Porter Snodgrass and remains in Southwestern Regional Jail until he is able to post a $60,000 bond.

This is not the younger Cook’s first brush with the law. Documents from the Boone County Circuit Court’s office noted that Jackie Lee Cook II was charged with nighttime burglary, destruction of property, attempted grand larceny, trespass, obstruction of an officer and assault on a police officer on July 1, 1996.

On January 2nd, 1997, he pleaded guilty to daytime burglary, and was placed on probation for 24 months. He was released from probation on July 17th, 1998.
