MADISON — Miami Dolphins Quarterback Chad Pennington and his wife, Robin, said that funds raised from an annual memorial race will be used to build a children’s playground in the Madison area soon.

The couple hosted the 7th annual Bobby Hampton Memorial Race at Scott High School on Saturday. The race is named for Robin Pennington’s father, Robert Hampton.

“My father-in-law was a great man with such great values,” Chad Pennington said. “We are excited to be here for such a great cause.”

The former Marshall star football player said the proceeds would go to a nonprofit organization called Kaboom, which builds playgrounds for kids.

The Penningtons said getting the event ready was a six-month process, but one they enjoy.

Robin Pennington is a Scott High School graduate from Julian.

“This is where I grew up and I will always be coming back,” she said.

She said giving back to her hometown area is something she feels honored to do.

“We want to provide opportunities for kids and for them to have places to have fun,” Robin Pennington said. “Through Chad’s 1st & 10 Foundation and the Bobby Hampton Memorial Race we have been able give back to the community.”

This year's event included a 11 mile race, 5K run, a 5K walk, a children’s race, and free health fair.

In addition to the 1st and 10 Foundation, sponsors included Lincoln Primary Care, Southern WV Health System, WV Heating and Plumbing, J&R Repair, Jake’s Eats n Sweets, Allstate, Hatfield Appraisal, Boone Memorial Hospital, Dotson’s Septic Tank Service, Friends of Marshall, All About Health, Hill Chiropractic, Releaf, Handley Funeral Home, Harold Howell DMD, Ferrell & Hill, Massey Energy and Hatfield & Hatfield PLLC.

Scott High Track Coach Nick Bias won the 11 mile portion of the 2010 Bobby Hampton Memorial Race with a time of 1:09:20.
