“We didn’t know we would be without our starting quarterback until about one hour before the game started,” said Sherman Head Coach Shann Elkins.
Instead of veteran Doug Ross, the Tide started Zack Heaver.
“Considering he didn’t have the reps in practice for most of the week, we thought he really played well,” Elkins said.
Heaver was 10 of 16 passing for 115 yards and a touchdown.
He drove the team down field and threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Alex Barlas in the first quarter.
“He did a really good job moving the ball for us,” Elkins said.
However, Heaver threw two interceptions, one of which came with 3:26 in the third quarter with the Tide clinging to a 7-6 lead.
The interception was returned to the three-yard-line and visiting Independence scored a few plays later.
Elkins said it was determined that Ross could not play with the type of back injury that he had.
“I thought we played well defensively, but we still had a few mental lapses, some penalties and turnovers that hurt us,” the coach said.
The Tide has had seven turnovers in its first two games.
“That is something we will have to work on this week,” Elkins added.
Tide runningback Jake Halstead had another good game with 83 rushing yards on 23 carries and approximately 30 yards receiving.
Mattlee Bassham was the Tide’s leading tackler on defense. He recorded nine tackles in the game, while Shelby Gray had seven.
“Defensively, I thought we played much better than last week,” Elkins said.
Sherman will play at home again this Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in Seth against Wyoming East, which has also lost its first two games.
Wyoming East lost to Scott 46-14 last week.
