Scott boys win both games in ‘Coalfield Shootout’ tournament

Scott won both of its games during the “Coalfield Shootout” tournament in Madison on Dec. 14-15.

The Skyhawks defeated Mingo Central by a single point, 62-61, and then beat county rival Sherman High the next day, 73-44.

In the Mingo Central game, Scott was down going into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Miners 18-14 in the final period to win the game.

Scott was led by Eric May’s 19 points, followed by Cody Brown’s 13 and Matt Dolin’s 10.

In the tournament, Sherman defeated county rival Van, 77-45.

SHERMAN 77, VAN 45: Blake Brewer’s 19 points led the way for the Tide’s Coal Field Shootout win. Garrett Lester added 11 points for the Tide. Brandon Elswick scored 18 points for the Bulldogs.

SCOTT 73, SHERMAN 44: Logan Webb had 16 points to pace a balanced attack for the host Skyhawks at the Coal Field Shootout. Also for Scott (3-0), Eric May scored 15 points, Matt Dolan 13 and Anthony Sigman 13. For the Tide, Blake Brewer had 13 points and Cody Muncy 10.

In other boys action: HANNAN 72, VAN 66: Hannan (1-2) had five scorers in double figures — Tyler Burns (15), Tyler Jenkins (14), Brad Fannin (13), Paul Holley (12) and Ty Paige (10).

Van was led by Brandon Elswick with 29 points.

HANNAN 14 22 16 20 — 72: Burns 15, Jenkins 14, Fannin 13, Holley 12, Paige 10.

VAN 14 23 16 13 — 66: Brandon Elswick 29, Keith Blevins 13, Logan Crouse 11, Hunnicutt 6, Yeager 7.

In other high school boys basketball news, the SSAC sets events for hoops tournament anniversary.

Special banquet speakers at the 100th state boys basketball tournament in March will be announced at a press conference Jan. 10 at the Charleston Civic Center.

The speakers kick off the tournament celebration at an open-to-the-public banquet on Tuesday, March 12 at the Civic Center, the site of the tournament March 13-16.

Banquet attendees will be given a limited-edition 100th tournament souvenir program that will include team photos of most, if not all, of the 229 past state champions as well as lists of all championship coaches, all-tournament teams, tournament trivia, feature stories, and many statistical lists and photos.

Fred Persinger of MetroNews will serve as toastmaster. Advance banquet tickets are available from the SSAC.

A 100th tournament logo will be unveiled and used on the Civic Center court as well as on programs, event publicity, shirts and other tournament materials.

Also, state tournament memorabilia will be featured in the lobby areas at the Civic Center - Class A on March 13, Class AA on March 14 and Class AAA on March 15.

All schools that have participated in a state tournament can display items with contributions welcome from schools, coaches, alumni or community members.
