The Scott boys basketball team continued a pattern that has frustrated fans all
season long last week. The Skyhawks manhandled Herbert Hoover on Tuesday,
February 5 at Madison then were never in the game Saturday at Chapmanville.
The split week left the Hawks with a season record of 11-7. Just four games
remain in the regular season before the sectional tournament begins at the Logan
Fieldhouse.
It was a long night for Scott in Saturday’s rescheduled game at Chapmanville.
Inclement weather conditions had forced postponement of the Cardinal Conference
match a week earlier.
In the end, Coach Nick Cabell’s crew fell, 67-45. The game was really never that
close.
CRHS senior star MacKenzie Martin started the scoring with a putback at the 7:34
mark of the first quarter. A minute later, Matt Dolan was fouled on a
three-point shot try. His made three free throws put the Hawks up, 3-2. It was
to be short-lived.
A layup put the hosts up, 4-3 and the Tigers never looked back. A trey and deuce
from Chapmanville made the lead 9-3. Eric May ended the drought and it was 9-5.
A layup by Martin and a jump shot from Jon Williamson stretched the lead to 13-5
with 1:46 flickering on the clock. A putback by Sigmon ended the first period
scoring with Scott trailing 13-7.
With senior star Matt Dolan suffering a poor shooting night in the early going,
Chapmanville streaked out to an 18-7 lead at the 4:39 spot. Dolan then sank two
free throws to cut it to 18-9.
A putback and two foul shots by Martin at the 2:19 mark gave the Tigers a 22-9
lead. An Eric May free throw cut it to 22-10.
Following a Chapmanville timeout, the Tigers reeled off seven points to lead
29-10 with 1:04 remaining in the half. Martin keyed the run with a three-point
bucket.
The teams traded goals with one coming from Sigmon and another from Zac Casto to
make halftime score 31-12.
It was a minute and a half into the third period before Kenny Plumley made it
32-12 with a made free throw.
Then Dolan put on a show for the Scott fans, drilling a trey and then stealing
the ball and driving full-court for a layup. When he was done, Scott trailed
32-17 with 5:57 to go in the third.
After a Chapmanville timeout, Troy Dalton and May exchanged buckets. The teams
traded free throws before a jumper by Webb cut it to 35-22 at the 4:36 slot.
Martin followed with two made free throws and a deuce before a Hawk bucket cut
it to 39-24. A driving Dolan layup made it 39-26 with 2:09 remaining in the
third stanza. The quarter ended with the Tigers up, 40-26.
Two free throws by Williamson started scoring in the final canto. Dylan Brown
sank a free throw before Chapmanville rolled off five points to make it 47-27
with 6:32 left in the game. Twenty-five ticks later, Scott had cut the edge to
47-31 on free throws by Dolan and Webb.
Martin made two free throws after a foul loudly disputed by the Scott crowd and
coaches. Brown put two free throws in to balance a Martin layup. Then Brown
slammed a layup with 5:04 on the clock to bring the score to 51-36.
After a Dalton free throw, Brandon Lafauci drilled a trey and it was 52-39 with
4:20 left. Dalton came back with two foul shots. Then a layup and free throw by
Plumley gave Chapmanville a 57-39 advantage.
Brown stopped the run with a trey at the 2:41 mark. Two free throws by Plumley
increased the margin. With 1:28 flashing, Lafauci proved the Hawks had not given
up, zipping a three-pointer to make it 59-45.
A layup inside the minute mark made it 61-45. The home team scored the final six
points in cruising to the 67-45 win.
Martin led the game scoring with 27 for CRHS.
Dolan tossed in 14 to lead Scott. Cody Brown added 10; Lafauci, six; May and
Webb, five each; Sigmon, four; and Dylan Brown, one for the Skyhawks.
Scott-60; Hoover-34
The Skyhawks made easy work of Herbert Hoover at Madison last Tuesday.
The home team doubled the score, 14-7, after the first quarter. They increased
the margin to 34-11 with a stifling defense in the second period. Because of the
stellar quarter, the Huskies showed little life in the second half.
Hoover did win the third stanza, 12-11, but Scott took the finale, 15-11 for the
final margin.
Sigmon led the game scoring with 17 points for Scott. May tossed in 15; Webb
added 10; Dolan, eight; Dylan Brown, six; and C. Brown and Kirk Price, two each
for the Hawks.
Aaron Burdette recorded 10 points to lead Hoover.
The season continued Monday, February 11 at Bluefield. On Tuesday, the Hawks
were set to host Wayne. The regular calendar ends with a trip to Mingo Central
on Friday, February 15; and the senior night finale when Poca comes to Madison
on February 19. The sectional tournament begins the following week.
