There will be major celebrations and commemorations as the state high school boys basketball tournament is held today (Wednesday, March 13) through Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center. This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the annual event.
The tournament started as a two-team affair in 1914 in the West Virginia Wesleyan College gymnasium in Buckhannon. It later expanded to include nearly 100 squads before outgrowing the small Upshur County town. Subsequent tournaments have been held in Morgantown and Huntington before the event appears to have settled permanently into the state capital city.
The event kicks off at 9:30 a.m., this morning when third-ranked Charleston Catholic takes on number six Buffalo in Class A. In a Class AAA match, second-ranked Beckley Woodrow Wilson meets number seven Hurricane at 11:15 a.m. today. At 1 p.m., Class A's second-seeded Magnolia meets number seven Wheeling Central.
At 5:30 p.m., top-ranked Class A Tug Valley starts the evening session by taking on eighth-ranked Clarksburg Notre Dame. The 7:15 contest pits number one Triple A Martinsburg against eighth-ranked Huntington High. The evening concludes with a Class A match-up Greater Beckley Christian.
Thursday is the big day for Double A, including the Scott-Fairmont Senior contest. At 9:30 a.m., Westside, rated third, meets sixth-place Bridgeport before a Triple A match between number four Washington and fifth-ranked Parkersburg South at 11:15. The Scott game is the third contest of the early session.
Thursday evening action gets underway with Double
