DANVILLE — A Danville man was arrested and charged with sexual assault in the second degree after a warrant was served on Nov. 8 by the Danville Police Department with assistance from the Madison Police Department and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County by Detective JM Thompson with the South Charleston Police Department, John Ervin Songer, 51, of Newport, is accused of sexually assaulting a South Charleston woman at her residence on Dec. 19, 2019. The accused then “made her drive to a secluded location in Alum Creek and assaulted her more against her will,” according to the report.

The report states the victim completed a sexual assault kit and submitted it for analysis. The results of the kit came back with results in July 2020 and male DNA was present. The report stated that on Nov. 2, the West Virginia State Police lab advised Thompson that the male DNA taken from the victim matched the accused from a previous DNA submission he had provided.

As of press time, Songer was held at Southwestern Regional Jail on a $10,000 cash bond but also has a $2,500 cash-only bond from an unrelated case in Raleigh County.
