Darren Allen Harless

MADISON — A Madison man was charged on July 4 in relation to the shooting death of another man on Workman’s Branch Road, according to investigators.

Investigators say Darren Allen Harless, 27, of Madison, was charged with second-degree murder in relation to the shooting death of Timothy Dunlap, whose age and residence was not available, but whom law enforcement say was “in his 50s.”

According to the Madison Police Department, Patrolman Joseph Marino and Patrolman Aaron Cook responded to a possible shooting at 4:12 p.m on Saturday.

Investigators say a 40-caliber Glock handgun was recovered at the scene. Harless was transported from the scene for questioning by Patrolman Marino and Trooper EM Shafer before he was charged and arrested.

The incident is being investigated by both the Madison Police Department and the West Virginia State Police.

“There is an autopsy scheduled for Monday and this is an ongoing investigation,” said Madison Police Chief Chet Burgess. “Our department wants to thank Sgt. Charles Sutphin and the State Police Crime Scene Unit, their local detachment, the Madison Fire Department, the Boone County Ambulance Authority and the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office for all of their work and dedication today.”

Burgess added, “My guys (Madison PD) were thorough and I’m proud of the work they’ve done.”

As of CVN print deadline, Harless was held at Southwestern Regional Jail with no bond.
