2005 Scott High School graduate and U.S. Marine SSgt Emmanuel “Preston” Smith will be promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant on Nov. 1.

Smith joined the Marine Corps in 2006 and was stationed with 1st Recon BN Camp Pendleton, California, where he then deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following that deployment, he was stationed with 2D ANGLICO aboard Camp Lejeune NC and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation enduring freedom.

Smith received a humanitarian medal for his SOFE deployment with the 24th MEU to Haiti after hurricane Mathew in 2017.

Additionally, he deployed to the Mediterranean the following year aboard the U.S.S Mesa Verde.

Smith has been awarded multiple medals during his 13 years in service including but not limited to: 3 Navy Marine Corps achievement medals, Iraq and Afghanistan campaign medals, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.
