PRENTER — A police chase of a stolen vehicle ended in a crash in the Prenter area of Boone County on Jan. 24.

Joseph Wayne Smith, 32, of Charleston, was charged with transfer, conceal, possess stolen vehicle, fleeing police in vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident property damage and driving without a license.

According to a criminal complaint prepared by Sgt. K McCarty with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, he and Deputy Daniels were alerted by a man who approached them in the Bloomingrose area regarding a stolen Mustang that belonged to his girlfriend. The report states the man said the car was stolen from Wendy’s restaurant in Marmet and he was tracking it via his girlfriend’s cell phone, which was inside the black Ford Mustang.

The criminal complaint states that after the car was spotted on the Prenter bridge, the accused “stopped in the center of the bridge” and as the officer approached, the accused put the car in reverse and “violently backed up,” and slammed into the side of the bridge before leading police on a chase that ended when the car rolled over an embankment off of Sandlick Road. According to police, the accused then fled the wrecked car and was arrested in a nearby area before being transported to Boone Memorial Hospital, where he was medically cleared and then taken into custody by officers.

As of press time, Smith was held at Southwestern Regional Jail on a $40,000 surety/cash bond.
