BOONE COUNTY — Boone County Schools will post multiple roofing/painting projects out for bid in the upcoming weeks, including projects at Sherman High, Brookview Elementary School and Van Jr./Sr. High School, followed shortly by a roofing project at the Scott High football field house.

“The Brookview roof needs to be replaced,” Interim Superintendent Lisa Beck, Ed.D., said during a public meeting on Sept. 27. “We’ve set aside $1.5 million, give or take, for that.”

Beck suggested a temporary fix to the roofing needs at Brookview before a much larger project to replace the entire roof would begin in spring 2022.

“I’m on the fence about this,” she said. “We could get a temporary fix for about $13,000 to $14,000 to hold us through the winter.”

According to Beck, Sherman Elementary School has been enduring a leak in the hallway that leads to the gymnasium and cafeteria.

Beck said that after receiving one bid, it is believed that the repair will cost in the neighborhood of $15,000.

“With your permission, I’m going to get that leak fixed, but didn’t want to get more bids until you knew we were out doing the repair at Sherman Elementary.”

The school system must receive three bids on any project that totals $5,000 or more.

Beck added that a painting project for the tattered exterior of Sherman Elementary would likely fall in the $24,000 range and complete an exterior project at the facility.

“That’s $53,000 for these projects, but they have to be done,” said Vice President Chuck Gibson.

President Susan Kimbler added, “If these need to be done then by all means, but I’m feeling a little bit neglected in the Scott District,” she said. “For instance, the (football) fieldhouse. They have a bad roof leak, and it is bad — I have been sent pictures.”

Beck responded, “I always get one estimate to give you a ball park, but that is one that will be coming in about a week and that is the Scott field house roof. That will be the very next cost I bring to you.”

Beck added that paint and roofing for schools occurs once every 30 years, and she suggested moving on the projects now.

Boone County Schools will move forward with the bidding process in the upcoming weeks for the Brookview Elementary and Sherman Elementary School projects and the Scott High football fieldhouse project will be discussed again at a future meeting.

Boone County Schools will meet again for a regular session at 6 p.m. on Oct. 4. The board’s meeting schedule can be found at The board meets in its chambers on the second floor of the operations complex in Foster.
