Van High’s Jacob Jarrell netted 17 points in a loss to Saint Marys.

VAN — St. Marys High School saw a 26-point game from Grant Barnhart help propel them to an 82-57 win over Van High in Van on Feb. 1 in the WVHIT tournament.

The Blue Devils (11-5) took an early advantage, thanks to buckets from Barnhart, Peyton Ouxier and William Steel as they entered the second quarter up 20-8.

Van (3-9) fought back in the second frame, as Jacob Jarrell buried a 3-point shot combined with buckets from Hunter McMicken, David Stewart and Austin Javins.

Van was down 36-20 at halftime and would have trouble digging its way out of the hole in the second half of play.

“St. Mary’s shot lights out tonight,” said Van Coach Dave Gogas. “They outhustled us and outcoached us.”

While Van went 8-of-15 from the free throw line, St. Marys earned more opportunities and went 15-of-21 from the charity stripe.

The fourth quarter saw Van surge as David Stewart and Jacob Jarrell knocked down long-range bombs, and the teams played to a 20-20 deadlock in the period. The Blue Devils, benefiting from the early lead, cruised to the decisive win.

William Steel hit five 3-point shots in the contest and Peyton Ouxier made four with Barhart drilling three, giving the Blue Devils a strong perimeter presence.

Jacob Jarrell led the Bulldogs in scoring with 17 and Hunter McMicken pulled down eight rebounds to lead the squad.

Van will host Tug Valley on Feb. 13.
