Phil Perry/Coal Valley News Sherman High's CJ Winnell (4) returned an interception for a touchdown with 2 minutes to go in Sherman's 28-27 win over Shady Spring on Nov. 2, 2020.

SHADY SPRING – Sherman High’s CJ Winnell returned an interception 71 yards for a touchdown with barely 2 minutes to go in the game and Davy Jarrell tossed a laser to Carter Dunfee for a 2-point conversion and the Tide edged Shady Spring 28-27 on a chilly night at H.B. Thomas Field.

Caleb Whittaker picked off a Sherman pass in the previous possession setting up an eventual fourth down play that turned tragic for the Tigers.

While Sherman (5-3) held a slim 20-14 advantage at the half, Shady Spring (2-5) took a 21-20 lead late in the third quarter after Jared Lilly tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Manns.

The Tide had three turnovers in the third frame.

It was Winnell carrying the offensive load for Sherman as the junior CVN All-County running back carried 34 times for 194 yards in the win.

Shady finished the season with the loss and Sherman will play at River View Friday.
