Matthew Britton | Coal Valley NewsMADISON — Sophomore guard Kelsey Harper has been a spark for the Scott Lady Hawks’ offense this season.
As of CVN print deadline, Harper was averaging around 18 points per game.
She is currently in the state’s top 10 list for three pointers made this season.
Additionally, she is in the top 15 for scoring and free throws made.
“She’s a shooter, and she’s worked hard in the last two off seasons,” said Scott’s coach Kevin Harper.
“She’s got to work more on getting to the rim and other aspects on the offensive end, but as far as shooting, she’s got really deep range. She’s shooting the ball from deep behind the three-point line, which you don’t see a lot in girls basketball.”
Coach Harper praised his facilitators and mentioned his team’s ability to get Kelsey into optimal scoring positions.
“Other players are finding her when she’s open. Jenna Butcher is also in the top for assists in the state, I think she is currently 10th or 11th in assists in the state.”
The Lady Hawks are currently sitting at a 4-6 record and they’re still in the middle of their seven-game road stretch, as they don’t return to play in Madison until Jan. 26.
Coach Harper said injuries have impacted his team during the early portion of this season.
“We’re just now getting everybody back healthy, the first part of the season Kelsey probably was made to score a little bit more, because we didn’t have our top seven or eight players because of injuries. We’re just now getting that back, so the others that I expected to be scoring and rebounding some more are just getting back into it together. Haven Tomblin was out for five or six games; she’s got to find her way to get back in there to give us 15 or 16 points per game.”
Coach Harper also praised Junior Cheyenne Robinson’s recent 23-rebound performance.
“Cheyenne brings us a lot of defensive pressure and obviously rebounding, getting after it,” concluded Harper.
