Welcome back to Phil for the Game, your glimpse into the sports communities of Boone and Lincoln Counties.

As we wind down another prep basketball regular season and transition into spring sports (with a little bit of COVID-induced overlap) I wanted to recognize a couple of prep athletes for exceptional play on the field and the hardwood.

Sherman High’s Caraline Nelson has put together an exception prep career for the Class A Lady Tide. On March 31, she scored career point 1,000.

Caraline isn’t just a sharp-shooter from the perimeter, In watching her play throughout her career, it is my belief that it is her preference to attack the basket off of dribble-drives and it is my favorite element of her game — the ability to create her own shot.

Congrats to Caraline, the Lady Tide and Coach Terri Dawn Williams on a stellar career. She joins eight other Lady Tide players in accomplishing the milestone.

The North-South All-Star Football Classic will kick-off at 1 p.m. on June 19 at South Charleston High School’s Black Eagle Stadium. The game is set to be televised live on WCHS-TV with Ripley High and Marietta College’s own former gridder Mark Martin in the booth.

Lincoln County High’s standout OL/DL Nathan Baker was selected for his stellar play at the line of scrimmage.

In a shortened season of 8 games in 2020, Baker made 40 tackles with three for a loss.

I want to congratulate Baker on a fine prep career playing for coach Bradley Likens. Until next week, be well, neighbors.
