Welcome back to Phil for the Game, your glimpse into the sports community of Boone County.

First of all, I want to thank all of my football coaches in the county for assisting me in putting together the CVN All Boone-County team, which represents some of the toughest choices I’ve had to make regarding this award.

I think this is a direct byproduct of all of our teams thriving and doing well, with Sherman and Scott making post-season play and Van just narrowly missing in 2021.

If you remember, I tried unsuccessfully to put together a Boone County Sports Hall of Fame committee a few years ago. For whatever reason, I had trouble finding enough folks from around the county to truly commit to it.

Since that time, President Michael Showalter and Vice President Dave Henderson at Sherman High have led a charge to start a sports hall of fame at Sherman High School.

I was delighted that I was asked to serve on the committee as a Sherman graduate and athletic contributor, but I have always ducked serving on any board or committee because of the conflict with my work as a journalist.

After talking it over with some colleagues and my lovely wife Chanda, I decided to commit to this — but I will be very careful in how I participate and in what role I serve.

With all that said, you can find the HOF’s Facebook page and view the bylaws for eligibility, nomination and voting processes. Public participation is welcomed, which makes it a true HOF, in my book.

If you are interested, I encourage you to visit the page and view the post that includes all of this information. I am not going to outline it in this column.

Outside of myself, the committee consists of the following:

  • Michael Showalter
  • Dave Henderson
  • (Big) Rick Saunders
  • Rickey Saunders
  • Jim Henderson
  • Jeremiah Pettry
  • Terri Dawn Williams
  • Eddie Weikle

The inaugural class has been voted on by both the public and the committee, including a tie-breaker vote. The class includes the 10 following inductees:

  • John Zontini
  • Red Zontini
  • Louis Zontini
  • Beth Cowley
  • Trishia Maynard McClung
  • Louis Reinacher
  • Jim Henderson
  • David Daniel
  • Richie Halstead
  • Jim Swierezek

I will write about the athletic prep careers of the inductees in a future CVN feature story as we get closer to the first ceremony, which is expected to take place prior to a Sherman High School basketball game after the holidays. Once that date and more details are nailed down, I will pass that along to you.

The HOF will display plaques for inductees in the lobby leading into the gymnasium. Inductees will also receive a plaque that matches the HOF plaque.

The Sherman High School Sports Hall of Fame is sponsored by Handley Funeral Home of Danville, which also supports the Coal Valley News All Boone-County sports teams. Congratulations to the inaugural year’s inductees, and I look forward to many more in the future.

Until next time, be well, neighbors!
