VAN — Liberty (Raleigh) High School used a 49-point second half and an aggressive defensive effort to beat Van 82-58 on Dec. 30.
“Liberty executed well on the offensive end and played good defense,” said Van coach Dave Gogas.
The teams came out in the opening frame and played to an 18-18 stalemate as David Stewart, Byron Stewart and Jacob Jarrell hit shots for the Bulldogs (1-5).
Liberty (3-2) took a slight 33-30 lead into halftime thanks to hot shooting from guard Braden Howell, who scored in transition and from the perimeter on this night.
The Raiders flexed their muscles in the third period when they went on a 25-16 run to take a commanding 58-46 lead that they’d never surrender after intermission.
Van made five 3-point buckets in the game with David Stewart leading the way with a pair. The Bulldogs went 12-20 from the charity stripe.
Liberty blistered the nets for nine 3-point bombs with six of those coming in the second half when they built their biggest lead of the game.
