SETH — A new turf infield and on-deck areas have been installed at Sherman High School, and the project has been completed in just a few months, thanks to the donations of businesses, former players and community members.

The project in total for the turf came in at $101,700.

“It was pretty amazing how fast it came together once the word got out there that there was a need,” said Sherman Head Baseball Coach Jeremiah Pettry. “It just grew from there. We started raising money in March.”

According to Pettry, the 66-ounce turf is a newer surface for baseball that also employs the tiny rubber pellets of its predecessors. The Tide already has a turf pitching mound, which would seamlessly blend to the infield.

Graphics related to the project will come in the form of the removeable on-deck circles, which boast the Sherman Tide Baseball logo.

Pettry said the list of contributors to the project is long, and he and the team are grateful.

“A special thanks to (School Superintendent) Jeffrey Huffman, (Board Member) Joe Tagilente, (Principal) Todd Barnette and (Assistant Principal) Matthew Stollings, Macs Hall and Jason Whitehead for helping with the bid process, donations, and project management,” he said.

The last piece for the project comes in the form of a mechanical groomer that ranges in price from $3,000 to $10,000.

“We have some money left and we are going to find a groomer that fits our needs and our budget,” Pettry added. “These kids can’t wait to get out there and play this spring. It’s going to be a pretty exciting time for Sherman Baseball.”
