Sherman High’s Alex Kirk scored 25 points — including seven 3-point shots in a win over Van on March 31.

VAN — Alex Kirk found the net on Wednesday.

In just over three quarters of play, the Tide sharpshooter buried 25 points — including seven treys — in what his coach said was an outstanding performance to lead his team until he and other Tide starters exited the game with it well in hand and cruised to victory, 81-49.

“He’s really been a leader for us this year,” said coach Aaron Pauley. “He’s done everything we’ve asked of him and he’s a good communicator. He’s really handled himself very well.”

Van — winless on the season — jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Tide went on a 25-9 run in the first quarter. Van had little defense to offer for Kirk — who tickled the twine for 6 3-point buckets in the half to lead the Bulldogs, 48-25 at intermission, coupled with hitting 13 total 3-point buckets.

Sherman (4-2) continued their defensive-minded game plan in the second half. “We communicated well and we defended well tonight,” added Pauley. “We shot the ball well and Alex was in a real groove and when a player is that hot you want them to put it up.”

In the third period, Cameron Caldwell found his range — scoring eight points in the frame.

It was Shawn Booth, Kalen Booth and Shawn Booth that provided consistent buckets for Van but it wasn’t enough on this night as the Tide flexed from the perimeter.

The fourth period was the Bulldogs’ best as they stood their ground with the Tide outscored only 14-12 down the stretch.

“We have improved as the season has progressed,” added Pauley. “Our goal is to be playing our best basketball come sectional time. It was a good win for us.”

Pauley added that it was good to allow jayvee players to get some varsity experience in the final quarter.

“We haven’t did a good job of closing games out the last few years and the guys came out in the second half with high intensity and got the win.”

Brady Green led Van with 16 points. Shawn Booth added 11. Dalton Rollo added 11 for the Tide.
