WEST MADISON — Senior cager Jagger Bell netted his 1000th career point and scored 18 on the afternoon to lead Scott High to a 53-47 win on Jan. 4 in the Hawks’ Nest, avenging a 56-53 loss to the Cougars in the Holiday Hoops Classic on Dec. 27.
Scott’s leading scorer and 3-point threat Jon Jon Hamilton did not play in the game for undisclosed reasons.
“Having played them last week, we were familiar with what they wanted to do and the guys focused hard on the defensive game plan,” said Scott coach Shawn Ballard. “The guys were prepared with the kind of looks they were going to get and did a great job of keeping them out of their stuff.”
Landon Stone got the home crowd into the game when he hit a 3-point bucket in the opening frame and Scott’s pressure forced the shooters from Shinnston into turnovers early, setting a strong defensive tone for the Hawks.
Scott (5-4) held the Cougars to just seven points in each of the first two quarters and led 23-14 at intermission.
Lincoln (3-3) came out strong in the third, with Payton Hawkins doing damage from long range and in transition with an easy layup off of a turnover.
Bell proved a load for the Cougars in the paint, but showed his range in the third where the 6-foot-3 wing man buried a pair of treys in a quarter Scott edged, 15-14.
The final frame saw the teams play to a 15-15 deadlock with the early lead propelling Scott to the win as Bell took control and netted 10 of his 18 points in the quarter.
Scott plays at Class A Charleston Catholic on Jan. 16.
